I've never seen anyone's like that before. Fading, yes. That's an all out color change!

Obviously they are not pushing hard enough at the track. You will see more of the rear calipers doing this as there is almost no air flow to the rear.

These weren't that bad as I didn't track as much. I've seen pretty bad ones where the paint gets burnt and it bubbles off the caliper.
Must be an EVO. I have seen some worse than that, but no photos.

any updates? 2 cases of same coating problem, wonder if there are more cases out there due to wrong wheel cleaner used? Perhaps the coating is too delicate afterall...

My stoptech trophies just came in. Can't wait to put them on.

My company makes aluminum flashlights with hard anodizing so I know all about it's characteristics. The aluminum oxide (anodized) finish is actually very resilient ceramic-like coating that is much harder than the aluminum allow beneath it. It's very resistant to wear and actually conducts heat better than raw aluminum alloy. It's not a paint or coating but a layer of aluminum oxided. This actually forms naturally - think of it as "aluminum rust" but never flakes off. When occurring naturally it's clear - so you normally don't notice it and would never think that the aluminum is "rusting." The annodization process is just a way to make that ceramic-like surface thicker. Unfortunately hard annodizing may stain easily from oils and grease.

my two cents

The bolts you are looking at are correctly called "Socket Cap Screws" They are a hard alloy steel that in most industries are used black or bare (no coatings other than oiled from the factory.) They can come in stainless steel and the alloy can be zinc plated which is what from the pictures they look like to me. You can coat any plain steel bolt in any plateing under the sun to fit a specific application. I can not speak to what coatings ST has coated or had coated the bolts. If regular zinc coating was used and chemical cleaners and regular wet envornment were used then I believe that it's very possible to get just such a result. There are some seriously corrosive wheel cleaners out there that specificly state to stay alway from aluminum surfaces in the disclaimer part of the bottle. The only other way to go would be to use a hardend strained stainless in the 300L family of bolts to achive the heat resistance and not cause embritlement on a standard commercial stainless bolt. They are a expensive option if you can find them.

How is that Stoptech known for this issue when only a few individuals are involved and may have involved the use of chemical wheel cleaners?

Yes, I had two Evos, an Evo 8 and an Evo 10... both did the same thing. It's like a badge of honor. You can tell who really drives their car when you look at the brake caliper.

Stop-tech replaced all my bolts and I reinstalled everything last week. I only have one picture I will try and get some more up this weekend. They didn't do anything about the finish but I did not expect them to. I wasn't asking for them to warranty the bolts after a certain point, all I wanted was to purchase them. After months of calling for the parts list and getting no where it took the OP's and my posts to get them to act. In the end they replaced everything for free so i guess overall I am happy with the outcome.

^ did you even try to wipe it down?

Here is mine after 3000 miles and a couple trackdays (160mph down the back straight of VIR).

I just washed my car and noticed the calipers looked dirty, removed the wheels and wiped it down. I only used soap and water. It's a good as new.

I think maybe you guys are using cleaners that are too abrasive.

Update -

Stoptech had agreed to help resolve these issues.

I contacted them earlier this week and because I "waited too long" they won't honor their promise to help. Previously, I wasn't able to get this taken care of as soon as I would like as they wanted me to ship them the brakes and I couldn't be down for a week or so while that happened. Ultimately, all I wanted some some replacement bolts and to take them up on an offer to replace other rusted hardware at 50% off.

FWIW - they were only willing to swap the bolts for free. No assistance resolving the issue other than that. No help providing me some basic info to rebuild them locally, etc

In the end, All I had asked for was for some replacement bolts and some info on rebuilding the brakes, (tech doc etc?) And I would keep the existing pastey, oxidized rotors, calipers. I'd also pay for the powdercoat.

IMO, the finish on certain areas may have been somewhat affected by a chemical in some way, however, I don't believe that that caused all the problems. I've had no finish issues on powdercoated wheels, other parts ,etc All the rotors look like crap - look at the pics!

More importantly, after buying $8,000 brakes, the company or their representative at least has never wanted to help fix this. Always dodging emails, making excuses as to why he didn't reply for weeks... (lost power, blah blah blah)

I wouldn't buy Stoptech brakes again, nor would I recommend them as the best option for brakes that hold up and look good over time.

And FWIW, there were other people that PM'd me with the same issues.

I gave them a chance to resolve this....They wouldn't even ship me replacement bolts and then decided not to honor a 50% discount promised on some other hardware... I Didn't expect one thing other than that. I accepted partial blame as I'm not entirely certain what happened. My car has only been washed a few times where I wasn't washing it and I've never needed to or would apply a harsh chemical. My car is PRISTINE, like new, other than the Stoptechs. I will post some more pics soon.

Not that impressive. I like my brakes, they just look like crap and their marketing guy is a d*&k.

Brembo FTW.

+1 on Brembos..they are OE on countless high powered cars

Stoptech probably didnt want to share any of the specs on rebuild of these calipers for propreitary reasons..just a guess..either way totally unacceptable
