AFE air filter??
Should I change my stock air filter to AFE?
5-10 HP increase? 1-2 HP increase? Someone said Leave that intake system OEM. AFE does nothing (or worsens it). Anyone else feel the difference? Good or bad. Edit: Add Dyno result http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...vving001-2.jpg Last edited by TLEE; 01-27-2009 at 03:44 PM.. Reason: Add Dyno result |

I got it, can't say that I feel a difference. But would one be able to feel a 5hp difference anyways? I don't think so. It increases airflow, so I'm sure it won't hurt.

I like my oiled one and I recommend it...its a cheap mod that should give you 3-5 hp. Anything to let the car breathe easier/better is a good mod especially since its cake to install and I'll be honest with you, the car felt like it had a lil more punch.

I have an RD Sport axle back installed on my E90 M3 with AFE dry filter and since the installed I felt loose torque on low end, so I put the stock air filter back.
Will the AFE air filter loose low end? I could not wonder this mystery out of my mind. Last Friday I found a decent local tuner shop with Dyno machine and they are Forum member friendly, give discounts to Forum members. (G-Dimension, James, 626-839-3777 City of Industry CA) I was running the OEM filter in the car and took the AFE filter with me. After few run with OEM filter, the shop let me swap to AFE filter to make a comparison, below is the Dyno result. All and all, I was quite surprise to see the low end torque increase; I guess my butt Dyno was wrong. Note: Blue line is run with OEM filter. Red line is run with AFE dry filter. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...vving001-2.jpg Last edited by TLEE; 01-27-2009 at 03:42 PM.. |

TLEE,
Those are some solid number on the inprovment. What kind of exhaust do you have on in the dyno.

But the muffler is unchanged during the Dyno run, only change OEM to AFE air filter, so the improvement is create by the AFE filter. |

Oh wow! 7whp and 5wtq is pretty impressive indeed for just a filter!

I can't think of any reason why less restriction in the airflow would cause a reduction of low-end torque. An increase in total airflow (in either the intake or exhaust) at the expense of velocity might, but velocity rather than airflow restriction is the key there.

I just installed a Pro Dry version of aFe air filter today... On high rpm/speed, with the music off, windows up, I can hear the whistling sound from the engine bay... so it def provides better airflow IMO...
In term of whether my car gain 5whp or not, I have no idea... |

Not that I want to thread jack or anything, but I wonder how well the BMC version will face up to the AFE. I know that the BMC is supposed to fit better but don't know about its performance.

Data is convincing. I sure would like to see a dyno test of an all OEM M3 (filter/exhaust) compared to one with a AFE filter and Remus or Eisenm. Exhaust combined. If number crunching is close then it should be about a
15hp gain? Does that sound about right? |
