Holiday Trip to New York City - Advice Wanted

Hi guys.

I read up on this forum quite a lot, and being from Scotland, UK this is my main contact with Americans.

My girlfriend and I are visiting New York later on this month, and I wondered if you guys who live there, and had visited the city before could give me some advice on the best things to see and do whilst we are there.

We're going for a week, so should get the chance to do a lot. Just wanted to hear your opinions on "must see" sights. Staying beside central park near the Carnegie Hall area, so I will be pretty central.

Also, as this is my first trip to the States, any do's / don'ts / good advice?

Can't wait to go now, It's somewhere I've wanted to go for years, and it's costing a lot of money, but I know it will be worth it!!!

Oh yeah, and just in case you guys are at a loose end, a chauffeur driven Vishnu tuned 335i from JFK to Manhattan wouldn't go amiss... lol

Enjoy -

live it up - Do all of the great tourist stuff:

Rock Center, Empire state, Ground zero, South street seaport.

Then do some of the real local New york stuff:

Get a Bagel and Smoked salmon from Zabars (uppoer west Side)
Eat a Bistro Burger from the Corner Bistro - West Village
Eat a brick oven pizza from Patsys (Multiple locations)
Go to Big Wong in China town for a bowl of Congee (Hole in the wall dive - bu the congee and smokes pork ribs are excellent)
Go to the real Little Italy in the Bronx - Arthur avenue and walk around/eat at the cafe
NY Botanical garden is beautiful
Walk Greenwich village
have smoke at washington square park (not the illegal one)
Walk around Union Square park and ogle the beautiful people
Eat at Union Square cafe - One of the best and least snobbish restaraunts in NY
Get brunch at the blue water grill - great brunch special - a brunch entree, juice and choice of alcoholic drink for about 20 bucks.

Have fun in NY. I miss living there, but am in Ny every day for work...

It all depends on what you're into.

Since you're coming in at the end of the month, you'll be here for Halloween, and there are usually plenty of great parties that time of year. Staying near central park is great, but it's not as central as you'd think. Midtown up to Central park is nice, but I prefer downtown much more. (It's just less crazy, younger, and better bars/restaurants.)

-Times Sq = Just a madhouse of tourists. Do the obligatory walk around, but don't eat there.

-Places to eat...
--'Shake Shack' (Madison Ave & 23rd St. in Madison Sq Park). One of the best burgers in the city, and it's a cool place to sit outside and eat a burger in the park. But the line is crazy from like 2pm--8pm, so expect to wait. Plus it's kinda central, so you would walk around the area and eat there.

--'Dinosaur BBQ' (West 131st & 12th Ave). IMO best ribs in the city. It's kinda up towards Harlem, so there isn't much else around. But if you want good ribs, go there.

--'Sushi Samba' (Two locations, 7th Ave & Bleeker, OR 20th and Park Ave.) Good Sushi and all that if you're into it.

If you want to check out the NY Irish...Molly's bar on 3rd Ave between 22nd and 23rd...Great hamburgers...and mincemeat pie....also great cider on tap...probably will have some 'football' games on too

It's a Brazilian steak house with some of the best, off the rotisserie meats you can have ANYWHERE!! It's an all you can eat meat extravaganza with fresh, succulent cuts of meat. Absolutely wonderful. The restaurant has a nice decor and they often have live bands play. Definitely a must to visit, because honestly, when you come to NYC, it's all about going to the restaurants and eating!

However, and this is a big one: you MUST not be picky, and have a LARGE appetite! I'm a skinny guy and I still ate a lot!

+1...there are so many great restaurants in NYC..impossible to list them all.

Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill is good too, not as good as the ones listed above though.

How old are you and your gf, and what are you looking for in this trip? Is it to do touristy sightseeing, go off the beaten path, or a combo?

I lived in NYC for about 7 months, and have never seen the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, Central Park, and I was in Times Sq once... for 15 minutes to meet a friend on her lunch break.

I'd say head downtown, Greenwich Village, Meatpacking District, also head over to Brooklyn.

thats all touristy stuff lol, except central park of course.. I've been to times sq several of times (only because of the subway and ktown is near ) But I joke you not, I HATE walking around pen station and times square... so many people, I never knew I could get sidewalk rage...

If you are going to walk around staring straight up in the air because you've never seen a skyscraper before, and therefore constantly get in the way of those of us who actually live and work here and have someplace to go...

Then Stay home!!! We have enough of you jerkoffs screwing up footraffic. I WILL knock you on your ass and won't look back!!! if i'm lucky, i'll step on your camera as well!!!

Just move your ass like you belong here and well get along just fine...and you'll get to enjoy the greatest city in the world. Have a great trip, be safe...and have fun!!!

I've tried this years ago and it was yummy but used up all my calorie intake for the whole week and raise the cholesterol to as much as my car HP

tell me about it... I hate having to constantly weave around people, especially when I'm running late with a portfolio tube strapped to my back, with my messenger bag and a model... I tell you, its HELL!!!
