SUBS BLEW.... AGAIN! (enhanced premium sound)

I recently had these replaced, but now they blew again... what gives?

Here is my previous thread on blown subs...

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ight=subwoofer

Did anyone have similar problem replacing these more than once?

You are likely boosting the bass to much from the head unit which can lead to a distorted signal being sent from the amp to the woofers. The fact that you are calling the underseat woofers "subs" leads me to believe that you are expecting more output than they can provide and that you are killing them with distortion. The solution for you is to install SWS-8's, an amp, and potentially a trunk sub.

I'm always very suspicious when I read in forums that OEM systems "blew" speakers, because it is either a cheap OEM design with no safeguards, the owner did modifications to the audio system or the source material being played is not correctly mastered (artifically and abnormally boosted bass).

you just have to screw around with the EQ to allow clipped waveforms into the woofers, or for them to reach mechanical limits, and the woofers are goners.

You can blow a speaker with 10 watts, if the waveforms are square.

Sine waves are your friend/

Solution: don't over-drive the speakers!!

i've known people who use the V shaped EQ curve
with bass set to +10
that can blow most woofers if you turn up the volume
so there are safegaurds
but if you try to make 2 8" woofers behave like a 15" sub
they'll try
but the'll sacrifice their lives in doing so

wow!

Thank you all for input!

I didn't screw with EQ, and always had bass below the medium.... but I did have volume on max...

Was playing some Deep House... http://soundcloud.com/djides

My name is dimabimmer and I didn't know I was a basshead!

So what's happening is that the music you listen to has bass EQ "built-in". When you turn the volume all the way up, you are basically asking the amp to produce more output than it is capable of, which results in distortion, which results in blown speakers.

If I were you I would ask the dealer very nicely to replace these woofers one more time, and if he does, save them through replacement! There are many options available, but for you the SWS-8 and a mono amp may be the best solution, otherwise you may have to dig deeper into your pockets and also get a trunk sub.

Question in this regards. Now my car is brand new and I just did a Musicarnw install. When I go to adjust any bass settings it also seems to adjust my JL sub levels as well. I wanna make sure I don't blow the stock ones but I was under the impression that my aftermarket sub setup would be adjusted independent of the stock stuff. Am I wrong?

Your aftermarket sub setup uses the OEM amp woofer outputs as its inputs (via the LC2i high to low conversion). Therefore any OEM bass adjustment will go thru the OEM amp woofer outputs, changing bass levels of all the woofers connected to the same lines.

The way to adjust your aftermarket sub setup independent from the OEM woofers is to set the OEM woofers first -disconnecting the trunk sub from the system in the process- with whatever OEM bass level that you want and then set the bass level of the sub via the LC2i knobs.

Ok, good to know. I will change up the settings accordingly.

Say your trunk subwoofer crossover is set to 80Hz. In that case, you can still adjust the HU EQ ABOVE 80Hz since those frequencies do not go to the trunk sub. However, it would be dangerous boosting frequencies BELOW 80Hz at the HU, since they would still play through your underseat woofers, and with the trunk sub blasting at the same time, it would be difficult to hear any distortion coming from under the seats. The frequencies below 80hz you want to adjust through the LOC, or at the amp gain.
