Probably not. Maybe something else, like an Accord or something, but not a M or something like that. Different cars for different reasons.

All the opinions make valid points. Everyone has to decide for themselves. Machines need maintenance. BMW makes great machines. To have a car with this capability and not expect to fix it is naive. I'd take my chances with the M3 over many other cars that are typically driven hard.

Stories of 300,000+ miles on other M BMW's, albeit with proper maintenance, are comforting. I would by the M5 from the guy in the video who bought it new for example. But I would not by an M3 with 50k if I found videos of it doing burnouts and drag races, or just too much evidence of previous modification.

Also, my 08 M3 get's the "looks brand new" comment all the time.

I'd pass on a 100K m3 unless it was an e36 or e46.

For an e9x, there are plenty of low mileage examples and that price doesn't really warrant the miles IMO. For another $5K you can seemingly get an 08 with 40K less miles.

Oh and for strictly a track car, I'd probably look for a car with a salvage title if I was going to strip and build it anyhow.

I just dont understand why someone want would a car that has to be used to the point of 100k miles and no warrnety. i get it if you are buying a economy car, and cant afford much.

but a BMW M3..... the car may be 30k, but it uses the same parts as my 2013 75k M3 uses. have fun with the repair bills.....

Not that I'm particularly in a place to judge, since I've bought 2 M3s new, but...
In 3 years his $30,000 car will be worth $25,000.
In 3 years your $75,000 car will be worth $40,000.

In those three years, you will have had similar parts costs and similar driving experiences. You're down $35,000, he's down $5000.

Used to the point of 100K miles and no warrnety? I didn't need an extended warrnety because nothing major went wrong in 108,000 miles. I think you should buy the extended warrnety because you might not be able to do any repairs.

That's short sighted. If that was the end of it all then why ever buy a new car ? Because a new car is virgin, pristine and a special thing and a used car is someone else's used stuff. Don't stop the comparison at 3 years later because the new car still has many years of problem free use while the used car will require more and more expensive repairs and attention from your garage you'll have to buy another used car while the guy with the more recent M3 will still enjoy his.

if you buy new and maintain it well and keep it a long time even with the depreciation you are getting the best years of the car and still doing better than buying new every 5 years. I see some ugly jealousy from 08/09 M3 owners toward 12/13 M3 owners in this thread. not so cool.

hum, cant say i ever thought about resale value or which ones holds value better. always been a new car type of guy.

man it must suck to suck.....

I will get off my high horse now. don't ever think buying a highly used car is better or smarter then new. new will last longer with all things equal.

bottom line.

I agree, which is EXACTLY why I bought my M3 new. I knew I wasn't going to sell it (ever), I wanted it optioned exactly how I wanted it, and I wanted it broken in and maintained to my standard from day 1. So I bought it new and have done so. And, really, I continue to maintain it as a $60,000 car, even though these days I'd likely get more like $18,000 for it. No expense has been spared in any repair, every preventative fix available has been done to my car. In the 135,000 miles I've been driving it, including 4000 track miles, it has broken down zero times, and there's no reason it should be breaking down in the future.

however

Most people, including M3 buyers, buy the car new, and then, 3-5 years later, sell it at a HUGE depreciation loss, and then buy another new car. It's certainly nice to have a new car that often, but undoubtedly it's also far more expensive than buying a 3-4 year old car and driving it for 3-5 year, then selling. You're looking at $35,000 in depreciation vs $5-10,000-- that's enough to cover 2 engine failures. Which isn't to say people shouldn't do it-- if the money is inconsequential to you, owning it new is easier (issue? take it to the dealer, their problem) and free of other people's cooties.

I was just explaining why someone might by a higher mileage M3 to this guy. Same driving experience, no $30,000 write off.

I bought my 2008 e92 in December of 2012 with 96k I now have 107k on it. the car was only maintained by bmw. when I picked up the car I replaced all the "lifetime" fluids when I bought it. I picked up the service records for it. the previous owner only ever had one break down which was a throttle actuator. right now I'm getting a 02 sensor code. two very common things. as for the strength of the motor I average 17 mpg mostly city driving. I have drove a few other e92 m3s and didnt notice them being any faster then my car. these cars are very well built and were made to last. I would buy another high mileage one any day! oh and I only paid 28000 for a own owner no accident loaded minus sunshades and zcp

This is an extreme case. It would be better to compare a high mileage $30k M3 to a lower mileage M3 that costs around $40k.

It's easier to find a M3 in the $40k range, so you can shop around for one that's been taken care of.

It's extreme but also not all that accurate IMO. My ED 2013 M3 was around $64k, in 3 years, as he said, it'll be worth something like $45k, because it'll have maybe 40,000 miles on it by then, so call it $20k in depreciation. Now, the 2008 buyer, who pays $32k for 96k miles, is also going to put maybe 40,000 miles on it in 3 years, taking the grand total up to ~140k miles and it will also be 3 years older. There is no way he gets $25k for that resale. By then he'll be looking at $19k or less because the mileage is simply sky-high at that point and nobody will really want the car. So he hasn't lost $5000, he's lost $13k - but that's not all, since he had no warranty, he's also had to invest approx $3000 per year for proper maintenance, further depleting his ROI. In total then, he has now lost $22k from the price he paid for the car once he sells 3 years later. I've lost about the same with my new 2013 M, but of course I've received a brand-new, pristine, updated (LCI, CIC, etc) car exactly to my specifications with the peace of mind that I will not be out of pocket one red cent more than basic market depreciation. He has no such guarantee as he may encounter a large failure that in one swoop will devastate his investment. Also, did I mention that I went on a vacation in Europe and was treated like a king by BMW at the welt, fed well, even given unlimited free beer! Toured the factory and received my brand new car on a spinning pedestal from a guy in a suit. You don't get that with your '08 with 100k either.

Saying new will last longer than used is such an ignorant statement from someone who probably doesn't turn their own wrenches. My used car is a CPO and has been just as good as my new cars. I can't stomach the new car deprec. Anymore. But a new car smell is hard to resist

bottom line on these cars is if your willing to turn your own wrenches mileage is not really much of a factor. in 10k miles I have spent about 500 in maintenance and that included spark plugs drivetrain fluids 5k engine oil changes and 2 air filters. that's probably 3k in work at the dealer which is absurd for how easy these cars are to work on

Agreed. Its really essential for a track car your changing oil, pads, brake fluid, rotors, on all the time. Also prevents you from spacing those services out due to cost.
