I'm replacing my point and shoot with a Canon T2i - excited to get into the DSLR world. The bundle comes with a EF-S IS II 18-55mm lens, is it any good? I don't want to spend a lot on glass, if I were to get one more lens what would you guys recommend?

I feel your "pain" friend. I started on the wildlife trail after having an osprey fly by my balcony while on vacation with a 70-200mm on my 5D MkII. With a few stops in between, I had a 7D and a 500mm lens within less than a year.

Grabbed the mark III a couple weeks ago. Been boating a lot so haven't had much opportunity to post anything up.

Dave, don't touch one until you're ready to buy one. It's that much better then the MKII...

My 7D has been sitting in the bag since I picked up the MKIII I'm not really seeing the point in the 7D anymore with how criso the shots are coming out on the MKIII. 800ISO is basically my starting ISO now. I don't bother going much lower often. There is so little noise at 800 that I may as well use it like it's 100ISO

I don't really miss the extra reach of the 7D as the 100% crops on the 5D MKIII are just about perfect. And the ISO 800 looks about as sharp as ISO 100 on the 7D. (from what I've seen so far...)

anyway, I have no buyers remorse from picking this camera up. It is basically perfect in my eyes compared to other bodies I've owned or tested.

Also, the rear screen is fantastic.

I made the mistake of trying one in the store... I'm close with one of the employees, and he let me take it outside and shoot my car a few times with it.

I went back the next day and bought it

Tell me about it! Didn't want to deal with the LR release candidates so can't wait for the real upgrade to come through. Although I returned my 5D3 so only have a limited number of images to play with. Interested to see more shots from new owners.

no editing done on the picture, no sharpening, no noise reduction, only taken in RAW and converted to jpeg and sampled at 72ppi.

This was shot at about 9:30 at night and is taken at 12,800 ISO

I should also mention. Some of the "perceived" noise is actually stars. So possibly not the best example I could have used

Can't believe you returned it

so far all the colour depth, detail, and ability to control noise have made this thing far superior to the Mark II. Which I have to say, I was a bit worried about at first until I shot the first shot. And even at the 1st shot, I could tell the difference. And the 5DMKII is a fantastic camera to begin with.

Yeah, I know. DxO now has modules for the MkIII, so now it's a matter of me having the money. I'll get one before the year is out. I'll use the 7D as my holder for the 70-200mm while I've got the 500mm on the MkIII and I'll begin the wait for the 7D MkII.

Not a dedicated "portrait" lens, but I find the 70-200mm f/4L IS very effective for portraits. When I add a 25mm Extension Tube and a 1.4x TC, it becomes a killer macro lens. With diopiter correction lenses it's even more powerful.

You can kill two birds with one stone by getting the 100mm f/2.8L lens. The USM is awesome, it has IS, and has good bokeh. It's awesome for macro, and is a good focal length for portraits too.

I couldn't agree more. I cheaper out and went for the non Life series version and my macro and portrait shotssuffer for it. The image stabilizer would do wonders for macro work and the L quality glass would kill for portrait work.

The 100L is a nice sharp lens that works well for portraits, but part of what you're paying for when you go full frame is the ability to achieve really narrow DOF for subject isolation - an effect that works particularly well for portraiture. To get the most out of this effect you want a faster lens than the 100L. The standard (and expensive) choices are the 135/2L and 85/1.2L, though the much cheaper 100/2 and 85/1.8 also work well as alternatives.

Of course, none of these lenses are particularly good at macro... but the 5D3 is an interchangeable lens camera, so you may as well interchange.

f/2.8 is fine if you have enough light. Most wedding photographers are in that range for most portraits, etc, so it should be fast enough for the day-to-day photography.

The 135 f/2L and 85 f/1.2L are excellent lenses, and probably sharper, but they won't help you with the macro part you're looking for. For portraits, as vachss said, they are better due to their larger apertures.

but with the latter lens, as long as your subjects isn't moving faster than a snail, then its autofocus should be able to keep up.

Sold my MKII last night and picking up a MKIII this week. After messing with the MKIII it made me hate the autofocus on the MKII. Hopefully I can get one before the weekend.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you sell it and for how much? I want to sell mine and upgrade. Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I read more threads and came up with a price.
