test drove new M3

I test drove the e92 M3 yesterday. I liked the interior, and thought the handling was great. The $1900 enhanced sound is not much better than Logic 7, if at all. As far as the diving experience, it lacked the low end torque and overall overwhelming sense of power I have in my V2 tuned 335. This car will need to be driving up in the rev range to fully appreciate its capabilities as the power really starts at about 5000 rpms. Overall, though a very nice car. I got really excited and I absolutely love my 335. But I can't help but think that my car is faster, and with the suspension mods etc. probably handles nearly as well.

You should feel very fortunate. My dealership doesn't allow people to test drive... I actually just wanted to see the Sedan and they were like "we got two of them sold them both 15k over sticker..." whatever.... Anyways, can you describe the M3 sedan? I mean is it impressive? Massive? wide?

I don't think the e90/92 M3 is a 4.1 0-60. BMW listed the e46 M3 at 4.8 0-60 and the e92 M3 at 4.7. I would suspect the Vishnu V2 tuned 335 would be near even in the 0-60, and with a LSD would almost certainly beat it. In spite of this I really like the car overall, but for what it would cost to buy it I could keep my 335 and get a base 135 for the track.

BMW's numbers are conservative. What can be realistically and consistently achieved by a magazine is probably more like 4.5 sec for the M3 and not 4.1 sec. I suspect a modded 335 would be around there as well. Most likely similar outcomes for the 1/4 miles times; meaning same driver same conditions M3 vs modded 335 should yield numbers that are very close. However, you can't make the 335 handle like an M3 by changing the springs and shocks. The entire suspension assembly has been redesigned for the M3. Also, I keep on reading Porsche's weight numbers are way too optimistic. I am not sure why that is though.

So, how can the M3, which weighs 500+ lbs more (3648 lbs ouch) get to 0 to 60 in 4.1?

Defies logic. Maybe, R&T hit a worm hole?

e92 M3 = 4.6 seconds.
Not really.

All cars will demonstrate a range when all variables are not precisely controlled. Look at the "database" we have put together here.

Minimum time is 4.1 s it has been repeated with the Coupe and Sedan. Worst time is 4.7 s. Average is about 4.3 s. Will you or I consistently get 4.3 s? Almost for sure not, however your figure is very conservative. Most folks when quoting numbers pick the best one, I like to show off that number as well but having a range is the best information you can have. BMW quotes 4.7 s and they are very conservative, most decent drivers should be able to get this figure. Again this means your figure is simply in the range but not close to the average nor anywhere near the best reported figures.

By the way the GT3 will have a range as well and I have seen 3.9 s quoted many times for the 2007 GT3. No major inconsistencies there.

Last but not least looking at 0-100, 1/4 mi times and traps are better indicators of a cars performance and it power to weight. 0-60 is too much a test of chassis, traction, tires, launch technique, etc.

Something to remember about Porsches is that they can launch very hard because of the engine (weight) over the rear tires. They get off the line very well.

allow me to pitch in re: the sedan. i went to see both cars today in the same dealer and all i can say that it simply looks awesome IRL. and i agree with everyone in this forum who said that the rear fenders look more prominent than the coupe's (although the coupe's ain't that bad either). maybe it's simply because of the inherent design of the sedan, having such a fat @$$ and the fenders just made it more agressive. on the downside, the taillights are just simply ugly in my opinion. this may sound absurd, but if i was ready to buy an M3 right now, (and i do not have a need to haul 2 or 3 people on a regular basis) the ugly taillights may be the factor that will dissuade me from buying the sedan and go for the coupe instead. but then, that's just me. ) maybe blacklines will help a lil better?

as for the dealership in seattle, yeah, i do agree we're lucky that those guys are not treating their M3s as if they're some picasso art or something. as i was walking up to the coupe, there were two guys getting ready to take it out for a spin. sweet mama....the sound almost made me piss in my pants.

cheers!

I test drove the sedan today and have to admit the M3 is growing on me. The sound of that engine is intoxicating, and the LSD keeps the rear wheels planted. The adjustable suspension is nice too. My wife used to compare my e46M3 to a stage coach.

I think I prefer the sedan. I don't really like coupes that much, and the fender arches do seem more prounounced on the sedan. And a savings of $3000?

I do have a tendency to switch cars too often. But at 58 maybe I need to swtich while I still can.

I test drove it a little bit ago myself. I don't agree with your statement that the new upgraded audio is better then the Logic 7. As a music producer, I have a trained ear. The mids and highs are most definitely better then the Logic system on the 7 series. The bass, even though not louder by any considerable means, carries a cleaner punch & a more accurate note with no distortion.
