Brazilian Model dies of Anorexia

She was 5'8" and weighed 88lbs.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15750402/

So sad
Hopefully some girls will begin to realize how dangerous and unhealthy it is too be that skinny.

Wow, that's crazy and sad. She's like 2 inches shorter than me but weighed half as much. I wonder how many guys actually like the "waif" look.. Personally, curvy > toothpick.

Not really sure where the emphasis is coming from for these girls to be so skinny, but it's a shame that they feel they have to put themselves through such an extreme torture to get noticed and be considered for work.

That's extremely sad.

Personally I prefer thin girls. Yet there's a difference between thin and dangerously skinny.

CA06 -- you have no idea how demanding and cruel that industry is. Weight is just one of the many things that you must control/change to remain employeed.

Wow, can't even start to imagine what they must have to endure. But I suppose that money and fame is the draw. So sad!

The money and fame is the draw, but in reality 10% of the people will even break into the industry... then maybe 0.5% of those will actually reach that fame. The critisism and things you endure can break down a lot of people.
Even with the draw of $$, things are soooo unstable that almost every model has a "real job", even if it's waiting tables or working at the mall. Yet, when the money is there, it's great; and the lifestyle isn't bad either.

That picture of her doesn't make her seem that skinny though; I can't really see her ribcage.

noooooooo she's so pretty
whats wrong with eating food!!! a weight below 100lb is nuts especially for a girl that tall, i wish GOD would knock some sense on anorexic girls' head sometimes. being anorexic isnt the way to live healthy and look pretty
the solution is to eat healthy and exercise daily, isnt that much easier than to curb one's appetite
sigh...RIP beautiful girl

I appreciate the message but I believe far fewer people die from anorexia than obesity related problems and yet we continuously tell overweight children it is alright. Neither are healthy but the anti-thin crusade encourages people to accept their obesity as a lesser of two evils when it is not.

Well I'd say that the difference is that fat people don't try to be fat. No one wants to be overweight.

The media needs to portray healthy, athletic, active people-- not twigs.

I guess the reason I never wanted to be skinny is because I didn't like girly things, and I always loved sports and idolized baseball players not Paris Hilton. That's why it is hard for me to understand why girls want to be so thin.

For example, I don't remember how it came up but yesterday in school I was saying how it was dumb Kate Moss, the anorexic coke addict, won model of the year. Thsi girl was like "Why? She is so hot! I don't care if she is skinny, she looks incredible."

Puts new meaning to the term drop dead gorgeous.

Seriously though, anorexia nervosa is a disease that is often poorly understood by the public. I once knew a general Internist who had this condition and was hospitalized numerous times because of life-threatening weight loss.

Don't ditch Kate Moss because she takes Coke! She is a Beut girl. + she is Australian. Lots of girls in the movie industry take drugs and unfortunately she was caught.

Unfortunately she was caught?

The prob with it is ppl idolize models and superstars (actors, singers) and their lives are just messed up, yet kids see them as role models? I'm from the who-gives-a-care-if-so-and-so-famous-person-did-whatever camp. The media focuses on their lives so much... oh the marriage, oh the divorce, oh the breakup, oh the cheating, oh the drugs, oh the arrest... and I care why?

I got my own life to live, not drool over someone else's. I know I'm getting off topic but unfortunately this topic needs a much broader pass to put it all into perspective. So I'll stop here.

There was a 21 year old on Dr. Phil today (found it by channel surfing) that had anorexia and literally looked like a skeleton with skin wrapping her bones. In the segment, she spoke about her self image and how she thought she had too much fat in certain areas of her body. Any sensible person could see that she had nearly zero fat on her and she was deathly ill (doctors told her that she was dying). She'd go to restaurants and ask for their smallest portion and it takes her an hour or two to eat just a few ounces. When I first saw her, she looked like a prisoner in a concentration camp, only she chose to do this to herself. It was sad.

A question of semantics but fat people do, for the most part, choose what they eat and not to exercise. Anorexics and bulimics have an obsession and compulsion that is stronger than that of a donut or Whopper.

But you'd find that only in a 12-year-old.
