Unhappy E92 M3 '07 Manual - Drinks Oil Like Mad

Car was serviced on the 11th April, thats 28 days! as of today.
It was 3/4 full when the car was left.
Then soon a week or two later it dropped down to 1/2.

And just today its down below 1/2! in 28 days. I drive it every single.
Pretty hard sometimes.
But c'mon something not right?

I can work out how many miles I've done (estimate).
28 days * 40 miles + 1% give or take = 1200~ miles?
Actually sounds like a lot in 28 days but still, some say it doesn't go down for 7000 miles?

Normal or not normal?

(I'll pop the 250ml left over from the service in tomorrow when the car is cold.)

Seems high usage to me!
I went on a 3700 mile road trip in 5 days trip last year with 50 other cars pushing hard and maxed out a few times on the auto ban and stelvio , ring, spa etc and oil level hardly moved and did to need to add what so ever which surprised me as I took 1ltr just in case, so to me yes does seem excessive although BMW will probably say it is within there tolerance guid lines!

a litre in 1000 miles is probably "within" tolerance

This. The oil monitor on this thing is finicky. One day it can read Full and the next day it can read 1/2 or less. I know that as soon as the Oil starts dropping from "full", it will drastically decrease from there...

The only thing you can trust on the oil level monitoring is "Full" or "+1 Quart"

Next time, monitor mileage between Full and +1 Quart.

Edit: I've also heard of other owners using LiquiMoly with little to no oil consumption, compared to the Castrol 10-W60.

Thing is its been steady at decline since the service, I repeat 28 days ago / 1200 miles ago. It hasn't been crazy telling me different readings. Just been doing down fairly quickly.

I supplied 9 ltrs and they returned 200-250ml back to me. So it should of been topped up but it showed 3/4 full.

Not sure whether to add some or wait till +1?

loose oil plug on the pan, check to see if oil is slightly ever so leaking there.

I agree check the pan and wait another month. If it persists than bring it back.

I would say I go through 1qt every 2,000 miles?

Right guys!

Serviced: 47,232 miles
Current: 48,237 miles

Difference: 1005 miles / 1 month + 1 day.

remember I said it just dropped below 1/2?
Well the warning just came up saying its at minimum!!!

I have just been to another hours blast just for fun with my new exhaust. But hey - 1 litre a month? Still normal?

1L per month sounds excessive.

Sounds a lot, but I'm sure others will say its within guidelines.
I might go in and ask my dealer and see what they say.

But mind you I do drive mine quite hard every other day.

BMW spec for S65 is 1 liter of oil per 750 miles! Sounds like a chugger of a motor to me, but how you gonna argue with the engineers that designed, manufactured, and built the engine?

no doubt it's a lot and not normal I would say.

I serviced my car at 1200 miles and now I'm at 8,500 and have only filled 1.5 liters since then. I've been to the track several times since as well and use the car daily.

Thanks guys,

where did you get that quote from?
If its true then I guess it is fine and nothing for me to do other than
to fill her up with oil again.

Castrol EDGE 10W-60. Says its for BMW M engines on the bottle.

Just done some more digging in the service manual,

Quote:
M engines have a maximum permissible oil
consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km or 1.5 l/600 miles.
That's 1 ltr / 414 miles of oil consumption that's technically within their tolerance?

I've popped a litre in and its showing at the upper marker on the dash display.
Does that mean full or 3/4 full?

Let's see how long this time it'll last
