No issues here either. I have the ZHP knob and shift "regular style" holding on to the knob.

I'll use this thread to once again plead with any other 6MT drivers to do the ZHP knob mod if you have not yet done so. It's just so easy and such a night and day benefit IMO. BMW really screwed the pooch in putting such a tall and unweighted gear shift in both the E46 and E9X M3. I had an actual ZHP in the past and it was the first mod on both of my E9Xs in the first week!

Sorry , this is off topic.

But I am really happy with my 6MT, You think I will still benefit from ZHP? I wish there was a guy who has done this mod and I could test drive his car.

What benefits do you gain from this mod?

ZHP is a shorty, so given my grip style, it won't solve my elbow problem.

I think BLACK OPS hit the nail on the head you need to get a taller stick

No pun intended

on the other hand that M-DCT might be the way to go you can then use the paddle shift works very well and so safe too.

Thinking back some 20 years when 2 friends of mine and I on Friday after work drove home to our friends house to have a drink or two. He drove a small Ford Truck and I was always seated in the center (straddling the shifter). So our routine was I got the word GO and I would operate the shifter. Almost like a DCT for the driver except he had to operate the clutch while I operated the shifter. What can I say it was he highligt of our week

I'm telling you this story (again no pun intended) perhaps you need to train your significant other to operate the shifter to solve this minor problem

EDIT ... PS, I'm 6 foot and never had this problem when I drove the e92 with MT before my now M-DCT.

Here you go a slightly less taller stick for you

I feel your pain (in the elbow) man . I have the same problem! Same solution too...lift up the armrest - problem solved .

I had the same issue with the E46 M3 as well. Same solution as well! However, in the E46 there was no compartment below the armrest so it didn't look quite as bad .

Totally agree with OP and this post. I have an E46 330i and an E90. Both have the same issue and on both my cars I have the armrest permanently raised. I don't understand why BMW does this. I've owned many different MT cars and never had this issue on anything but BMW.

No issues here. Lots of times when just cruising/being lazy, I often lean on the arm rest and just shift with wrist. When I am actually driving, I am sitting up enough to avoid it.

Not ideal but...

What about moving your seat a hair closer to the wheel?

You have 2 problems... your holding it like a hotdog, and you got really short forearms. If you have ever driven any other M cars like the E46 or the E39 M5, the shifter was so tall you would think your driving a bus. They shifter feels 100X better than any other previous M car manual gearboxes IMO. The left side of the console lid does extended if you lacking length in the forearm department. If you think the shifter sits too high, try a shorter one that is a little heavier so it does not change the shifting effort. If you keep gripping the thing like a Ballpark Frank your going to miss gears downshifting or money shift it, which you will really regret.

Not entirely sure what you mean by a bar grip..? Are you wrapping your whole hand around the lever? I shift from the side as well but only use 3 fingers to push forward or back with the top 2 wrapped slightly around the knob. My thumb is up going into 1,3 & 5 and down for 2,4 & 6. I really don't find that I need to move my whole arm. It's all in the wrist this way... And "she" loves it!

OP. I think your best bet is to change the way you grip to a more standard over the top style. I just got back from a drive and had no problem keeping my elbow on the edge of the armrest and using an over the top method without moving my elbow. It's mostly wrist action (insert joke here). Maybe your forearms are a bit shorter also?

no forearm longer than usual as i bump my elbow...at the 4th gear position, when i grip the stick, my elbow is already on the arm rest

I do hit it but not in annoying way. Kinda just rest on it a bit. Only had the car for about a week I think I can just get used to shifting aggressively with it.

When I shift to 2nd and 4th, my elbow hits the center console/storage box (the right side too if I slide the left console back). Recently, I just simply flip it open, and my elbow doesn't hit and I shift much more smoothly.

I'm 5'10", I don't have a disproportionate torso or freakishly long forearms, I don't sit too low or too high, but for me the center box is just not ergonomically designed well. Anyone else annoyed by this too?
I know exactly what you mean. I think I have adjusted by holding my elbow up and out to the side a little. Now I do it without really thinking about it. Gotta tell you, however, that my previous Audi RS4 was MUCH worse in this regard. The rearward part of the center console was up so high in that car.
