Manual barely. Automatics over 3000. And the 911 is well over 3000 lbs.

I guess my point was more along the lines that all manuf have made their cars heavier year over year. Today's Miata is a far cry from the original weight when that car was originally released.

Yea I understand. It sucks that cars are getting heavier. Lighter cars were always more fun. But manufacturers tend to think that adding more power and fitting fancy suspensions and active roll stabilization somehow nullifies the need for a lighter car. But cars that are lighter will still be fast while having less power and they wouldn't need fancy suspension systems.

I think in the future though that car makers are going to try and start building lighter cars due to fuel consumptions and engine regulations.

yes they are, BMW is starting to go that way right now- hence the new engines- 1.35 liter 3 cylinder with turbos and 240 hp and the new 1 series tii/perf model with a 1.8 liter turbo 4 and 320 hp in a 2900lb package supposedly!!!

Go light. Lotus Elise with its removable top.

Seriously, though, that's probably a bit too hardcore for him and would be a terrible DD. The Z4 TT looks fantastic, IMO. That would be my choice.

In the OP's case, I'd say

E85 M Roadster > E64 M6 > E93 M3

new m3 convertible. I think it is one of the best convertible out there right now. The screaming sound of the 8400rpm V8 with a hard top convertible roof, seat 4 comfortably. Nothing can beat that at the moment.

M6 is getting chucked the new bodystyle is getting released either next year or the year after as a 2011/2012 model.

If you check the BMW Canada website the 2010 models are already available and this always happens when the model is at the end of its lifecycle, so they have an earlier production run for the last year of that model.

This goes for both the M5 and M6 btw!

I was also considering the M6 cab, because I was thinking of trading in my M3....but after seeing this recently I am no longer considering that option.

Its your father, why dont you introduce him to the Aston Martin Vantage, Mercedes SL63, SL65, SL600 etc. I think the SL will be the closest substitue to the Z8 in terms of price point, prestige, performance etc.

If hes a track person the 997TT Cab. But considering most of us who buy cabs are using them mostly in the summer even a 997TT cab might not be a bad idea.

So theres many options
Aston: Vantage Roadster, DB9 Roadster
Bentley: Continental GTC Convertibe
Chevorlet: Corevette Cab
Ferrari: 360 Spider, F430 Spider (a higher price point)
Mercedes: SL (dont even consider the 550 its garbage and waste of money!, SL63, 600, 65, and if you can SL65 BS )
Porsche: 911 Cab (Carerra, 4S, Turbo etc.)
Jaguar: XK series (beautiful looking vehicles)
Lamborghini: Gallardo (used spider models close to what the Z8 cost new!)

Heres a big list, and im sure you can figure it out now.

Cheers
