6MT folks, does your elbow hit the center glove box?

I have my 6MT M3, and have been driving it for 2 years and i never was able to get comfortable with my seating position. I grip the knob like you would grip a bar and NOT the over-hand over the top. (no this is not my first MT, but yes it is my first E9X car)

When I shift to 2nd and 4th, my elbow hits the center console/storage box (the right side too if I slide the left console back). Recently, I just simply flip it open, and my elbow doesn't hit and I shift much more smoothly.

I'm 5'10", I don't have a disproportionate torso or freakishly long forearms, I don't sit too low or too high, but for me the center box is just not ergonomically designed well. Anyone else annoyed by this too?

Hmmm, I also have a 6MT and don't experience what you mentioned on the m3. Try changing how you grip the shift knob. Try the over-hand grip where you cover the numbers with your palm. That might help.

Btw, I also did the bar grip technique on my old galant that came with a large console. My elbow hit it as well. When I changed my grip to the over-hand style, I never hit my elbow on the console any longer.

man, I'm very rigid, i hate the over-hand style. I drove that way on my first MT for the first year or so, then changed to bar grip and I haven't changed it since (7 years now) as I'm more quicker and smoother.

7 years on the bar grip style is a long time man.

I guess you have to always lift the console's cover every time you drive OR you may have to take the cover off for good. The latter would be your best bet since lifting the cover up whenever you drive may ruin the hinge mechanism in the long run.

Are you subconsciously longing for the DCT?

Trying really hard not to get a "that's what she said" comment here. Since I grip overhand I don't have this issue. Have you tried pulling the short part of the armrest forward? Then maybe you could rest your elbow on it??

Doesn't happen to me at all.. kind of unsure how/what is happening with your situation..

It's especially nice with the armrest extended for longer/comfier drives..

I'm good on shifting with overhand, but maybe you can try this....

i use overhand and always hit the stupid armrest myself. the porsche has a flat center console for this very reason. i just put the armrest up for now until i can come up with a better solution. the M3 GTS has a flat center arm rest although I have no idea why since its only in DCT. Doesn't help since I have a sedan.

I have to keep my elbow higher than I'd like to, or yes, I would hit the center armrest.

I use the overhand grip. The shifter is too low for me to do the bar grip even with my seat set all the way low.
