You were driving the car and it was fine for the time leading up to it ticking over to "low oil"; it's not like the car goes from "fine" to "going to explode!" in that instant. BMW did not design the car with the expectation that you have to carry a quart of oil everywhere.

Your engine will be fine with the use of 0W-40 in a situation like this - clearly stated in the owner's manual.

They basically send a AAA person out, or whoever is in the area that they have a contract with

Really??? First thing you do is stop and look under the car to make sure it's not a significant oil leak. If not you continue driving until you get some proper oil. No need to put some other oil, you are at the minimum of required oil level. That means you are still good.

... also do note that there are 2 types of warning lights one being amber (CAUTION) and the second red (LIKE DO IT NOW or IMMEDIATE ATTENTION). I had some false alarms as well so checking the oil level on the computer readout is also a good idea (the only problem with this is I find the level takes for ever to show, in my case only after some 16 KM [10 Miles] would the correct oil level show up). I do wish like so many of us that we still had the old fashion dip stick

... for him to use the other oil was no problem as long as he gets an oil change soon thereafter all will be fine.

If you are just a quart low, it's probably preferable to drive it rather than add the Mobile oil. But neither action should cause problems. And "break in" style driving is not necessary, assuming no issue other than normal oil consumption.

i recommend keeping a quart of oil in the trunk just in case.

BMW makes a cute little bag that holds a quart of oil and it velcros on the side of the trunk liner. It comes with foldable funnels and a rag.

This, I've had that happen a few times myself. Its just a warning to add a quart of oil as you are at the minimum level, in my case I went over to the dealer as soon as I could (within a day or two) and got them to add oil. No need to act like its the end of the world, jeez.

Wrong! In my case, i was driving more than 1000km from calgary to vancouver and i got all these warning until it said i can not drive the car anymore and that was when i stopped.

I had the same problem, but it got to the second level of warning saying their could be damage to my car after I went to 3 auto parts stores looking for my oil. I pulled over immediately and called BMW, the best they could do was tow me to the closest dealership.

Well sir, let's continue this common sense train. Upon receiving low oil light you now put yourself in the "gotta get some more oil at first available opportunity" mode and NOT drive 1000 km.

Sorry dude, but you don't know the whole story. I got the warning when i was 300 km away from my destination and it was Canada day so everywhere was close except gas stations. So you still would suggest as common sense i had to just keep driving ?

Anyways, now i keep a bottle of oil in my trunk all the time

it seems that some people on here can't figure out how to read that manual that is sitting in the trunk. Non-10W60 oil to top up IS FINE ACCORDING TO BMW! Don't use a 20 or 30 wt and you'll be fine.

Maybe you should key a closer eye on your oil level. Its only a couple of clicks away. Better yet, leave the graphic on all the time since most of the other information you can cycle through is far less useful.

This just happened to me on Tues... Light comes on saying im one qt low. I called the local BMW and they said this car uses a special oil, Castrol TSW 10-60. I stopped off at a few places and couldnt find the oil. Just drove 14 miles to dealership and they put a qt in for me....
