How to figure out software version?

How do you figure out your current software?

I can figure out the Nav on an '09, but what about the main software(ie. Program 34.0.1)?

On-Dash secret menu:

For the purposes of this discussion, let's call the trip odometer buttong "T" for now.
START:
1: insert the ig.key into the slot pushing in the meantime the T button. You enter into the secret menu. It will appear a code like for example ZB12345.
2: You have to add all the numbers you see. Example:12345 = 1+2+3+4+5 = 15.
Remember this sum.
3: Push 'T' several times until you will see the menu n.19. Wait for about 2 seconds.
4: You will see the following: "lock on" and after other 2 sec. "code 00".
5 Push the "T" button the number of times from #2 above (in this case : 15). Ok now you have entered into the secret menu.
Now the menu will go automatically to menu number 01.
6: push the "T" button for example 7 times and wait for some seconds untill you will enter into the sub-menu 7.1- 7,2 etc . In this area you will see the water temperature...For the complete list read the precedent post.
Note: when the car is not with the engine running, make a test with the menu n. 2....Very spectacular....

iDrive Secret Menu:
Press & hold the iDrive dish button for 10 sec.; turn clockwise 3 clicks; counter clockwise 3 clicks; clockwise 1; counter clockwise 1; clockwise 1; press enter
Do any of these give clues as to the software version?

PG - has anyone ever determined that you can get the software version from the secret menu(s) though? I thought it was merely postulated, but never proven.

I know that the iDrive secret menu will give you something called FSV (FunctionalSoftwareVersion), which is a decimal number. There was a list in the 3-series forums about matching these up to the PROGMAN and/or ISTA/P versions.

Momentum BMW wants to charge me $527 to update my software (not including nav). Aren't they supposed to do this for free under warranty?

Are you sure you want to to that? I have an 09 and was updated with the latest software (no cost, under warranty or whatever) about 6 weeks ago now. If I could do it over, I would not do it as it's only a down grade. What I've noticed:
1) When it's cold out even though I generally run the motor 1 minute or so before driving off (I have to close my gate) I have a low rpm hesitation/bucking when I first drive off which I'm almost certain is due to them leaning out the cold operation enrichment (I've experienced this with carbs many times before).
2) The stupid gong now goes off when shifting from reverse to forward (I have DCT) and says car is not in P position.
3) Can't move the car 1' without the seatbelt engaged (remember I have to close a gate), huge nuisance.
4) Can't back up with the driver's door open.
5) Background contrast on Nav is now grey which is harder to see and read than what I had previously.

I think they changed the DCT program too as the clutch engagement is much softer from a stop, but this has not been a biggie.

All-in-all I see no utility or benefit from the "upgrade" just more annoyances. I would not recommend the software upgrade if can you can avoid it, unless you have some issues that need fixing (I had none).

Lots of bucking is why I wanted to do it, but it looks as though it is still an issue. I mainly wanted the option to have steering and power activated as soon as I start the car without worrying about the M button so I can keep the M button on MDM and stuff.
