Dollar signs and IPod issue

Hi guys. Ive looked through the forums and haven't been able to find an answer on this. I have a 02/08 M3 that I bought used and lately it has occasionally been failing to recognize my iPod in the USB port. Unplugging it and switching to the cd drive seem to help for now but is this indicative of a problem? Also sometimes dollar signs are displayed like so- $AppleIn$ wtf is that? I do not know what (if any) mods or coding has been done but I do know that it is not electronically limited and the angel eyes flash when unlocking so I figure something must been done. Any help would be appreciated.
