They should teach some basic physics in high school, at lest to get people to understand meaning of simple numbers in life situations.

An engine with 300 lb-ft @ 4000 and 414 HP at 8300 is completely equivalent to an engine with 600 lb-ft at 2000 RPM and 414 hp at 4150 RPM, which would be awesome for a diesel. In fact you can magically transform the former to the latter with a simple 2:1 gear set (which M3 effectively has, compared to a typical diesel engine). This is a precise fact, not an opinion or speculation. If you do not understand it or doubt it, ask refund for your highschool diploma. Sorry for being abrasive but this argument just gets too old.

ps: torque means it can pull stuff (including itself). hp means how fast it can pull stuff (including itself). sure a lot of torque gives advantage to average HP under the curve, but M3 has virtually flat torque curve with aggressive gearing which keeps it in the power band.

Comparison

I have both. The 335d feels lighter than the M3 because the torque kicks in with the engine at low RPM and not trying very hard.

However, getting back to the OP, the M sport package on the d is nothing like the M3. The M3 is much firmer and I easily go over speed bumps that cause the d to bounce severely and hit the bump stops. The real M3 suspension is far better. The steering wheel, floor mats, and door sills on the 335d M sport package do nothing to overcome this.

I love getting 40 mpg in the d, but there is no substitute for the rumble of a real M3 V8 through an Eisenmann race. Car enthusiasts hear the M3 and nod their heads in envious approval. That's what the wannabe is missing out on.

There's only one thing you need to say to people like this...

"If I'm stupid for buying an ///M then why are you trying so hard to look like one?"

I mean, you don't see me rebadging my car with 335 emblems.

Although an M3 is a very attractive car, its fuel economy is kryptonite for me. A car means freedom of motion to me first, and that means freedom from the cost of driving at a whim. I don't like the poor fuel economy of the V8 M3 - a car specifically designed to beat 911's in competition after they were unable to do it using 6 cylinders. Anyone can design a car that can go faster and even handle but not get good fuel economy. For all its flaws, Porsche always improves power AND fuel economy in its design upgrades.

Diesels hold a special place in Europe and they do outperform gassers, in general, under most circumstances. 0-60 times be damned. To each his own. You talk HP, but you drive torque.

And I won't be fooled to think that ANY M3 owner thinks he/she doesn't feel their car is FASTER than yours. So don't give us 335d owners that BS about us being jealous because we know you think you are faster. Perhaps. You are certainly paying for it.

Be good.

If I wanted great fuel mileage, I would have bought another car. Glad you love your diesel.

M3 is a nice car no doubt. But a V8? Nah, I'll pass. There doesn't seem to be very much objectivity as regards this topic however. To each his own though.

My complaint was about having M badges on a non-M car. I own a diesel vehicle myself in addition to the M so I'm not against diesels whatsoever.

I have a 2011 335d M Sport. Not being a @$$ here, but BMW puts the ///M on the sill panels, steering wheel, and rubber foot rest thing. I put 3 M colored stripes on my left grill and left fender. Doesn't mean I think it added horsepower. I did get the JBD (tune). It is supposed to add 70-80rwhp. Does it...no clue. Either way I still get 35+ mpg, which is why I bought the car. Their test car (and others on these forums) have put 308hp at the wheels. I've seen a dyno sheet on a 335d with an "Evolve" tune that put 327hp at the wheels. That's pretty good since the torque is around 500 ft lbs at that point. And they say the 265hp 335d is as fast as the 300hp 335i with 35 less hp. I say it would be pretty close to an M3 in a straight line.

Anyway, is it only ok for BMW to put ///M logos on it as long as they keep the ///M on the inside? I get that the guy was being a rude and snooty, but I seem to come across more M3 drivers that are like that than 335d drivers. I could have just as easily afforded to buy an M3 (As a matter of fact, I am thinking about getting one soon. That's why I'm in this forum right now). I could also have spent $35K on an '08 6 series and then told you that your M3 sucks because it's "just a 3 series". The way I see it is we all drive BMW's and we should all represent BMW. We shouldn't be fighting with each other. That guy was in the wrong.

PS - IMO, the M3 is the flagship 3 series. Period. That is deemed by BMW and no one else..

That must be an in-gear stat, thus pretty much worthless. Odd, as an apparent M3 owner, you couldn't figure that. I've covered 4k, at least, in a E60 535d and I like the engine a lot especially for Europe. However, there is no comparison in pace between the two and passing is not "outrageous" at all in the d (though it is good).

Also don't forget that the usable range of the torque curve in "most" diesels is only about 2000-2500RPM. The S65 has a usable torque curve range of over twice that with 80% of peak torque from 2000RPM to 8000RPM.

If the 335 is better than the M3, then why did he put M logos all over it?

These 335-driving guys need to come out of the closet about the fact they're really M guys.

I have an E83 that BMW did the same thing to, and they put Ms on the wheels to boot. I wanted sport suspension and that was the only way to get it. But I'm sheepish about it and a little embarassed when I'm in a car park and an M3 or M5 driver pulls by.

BMWs are great cars, and I wish I had one of everything they make. It makes no sense to me why some people put their own M badges on them. But it REALLY makes no sense to me why somebody would do that, and then hate on an M3 driver.

I like Munich better. BMW drivers are numerous, and generally go 'round debadged.
