Rumble in 5th gear...6spd.

Before we start, I welcome any DCT shit posting, after all the shit I posted about 6spd being better, I have it coming

So when going about 45-55 I get a rumble in 5th gear, and only 5th gear...as soon as I put the clutch in, it's gone, or if I go to 6th or 4th, it also goes away...just wondering what it could be....It's pretty slight so I don't know what it could be...

Any help?

Thank you

Anyway good luck with getting a fix...my best guess would be some sort of bearing noise in the gearbox.

Could be RPM dependent. Try cruising at the same RPM in 4th and 3rd and see if you can hear it. Stuff like that gets louder in higher gears because there's more load on the engine at the same RPM, which can cause things to get louder if they're not damped out. If you've heard of what happens when you put a lightweight flywheel in a BMW instead of a dual-mass unit, that's kindof what they sound like all the time to me.

My 6MT does the same thing in 5th gear. 5th is the "straight through" gear where the input shaft is locked to the output shaft, leaving all of the other gears in the transmission to spin without a load on them.

Don't worry about it, it's nothing. If it was actually a bearing problem the gearbox would fail within a few hundred miles.

Thanks for the help man
It's just kinda weird since I have only noticed it recently...been driving the car for about 4000 miles now..

I have noticed this rumble in 5th gear too and just assumed that it's normal so I haven't posted.

FWIW, I'm almost never in 5th for more than a few seconds anyway, if that. Just like every BMW I've ever owned, this engine is as happy to putter along at 1500rpm as it is to run up to redline. So, I select the tallest gear possible once I get to whatever cruising speed I'm going to be driving, even if that's only 40mph. Only time I foresee needing 5th is at 142mph (8300 rpm in 4th).

If you pay attention to how automatic transmissions shift, this is a large part of why they are starting to get higher EPA ratings than manuals in some models, including some BMW's. Most people just don't drive their manual cars like that, and the testing reflects "typical" driving behavior.

Yea I usually select the highest gear when I am crusing, but when I'm driving at night with all the cops out with instant on I don't speed, so when I'm in 6th at 50mph, I am hovering at 2000rpm so it droooones lol... "Sorry officer, if I don't speed, my car rumbles"

Do you have an exhaust that haven't put in your signature? There's no drone stock.

Tried 50 to 60 mph in 5th, and couldn't hear any 'whine'. Lowered window and even less, due to wind noise. But for what I read is simply harmonic resonance, which is perfectly normal. It's a lot more noticeable on motorcycles, due to less engine isolation. The solution is to just go right past it.

Drove with the window open (I'm almost always on the highway... or too hot or too cold for that) for the first time, and man, this engine sounds FANTASTIC outside too (inside is perfect). I thought it was much quieter. Glad I decided to keep it stock. And I didn't go over 5K rpm. Only thing is I decided to work on the myriad rattles and noises; it's just ridiculous how many creaking noises this car makes. Geez. Started by removing the 3rd brake light. Remember the cover making a racket when I was snapping it back, and it does. Just touch the roof where the rear roof console is and the cover makes a racket. And I bet that's the noise I thought was coming from the moonroof. Will put masking tape on all tabs and reinstall it. There's another inside the center console that's driving me nuts, but will probably have to remove it. Need to investigate where is coming from. Oh well. Car is a gem to drive.

In that area a common noise is from around the centre air vents...pushing down on the trim in front of the idrive screen will normally stop it momentarily. If so its a common problem and should be known to your dealer.

Doesn't the auto E9x 328i stay at 5th gear unless you manually change it? When do you notice your engine starting to lug?

It's a shaft support gear worn in the gearbox, take it in.

I checked mine for the noise today, I don't have it. Could be worth checking.
