the real sad news is inspite of what options we have available
not a single one works well
you have the HID which are super bright but have their share of issues (heat, obvious that you installed something aftermarket due to the ballasts which have to be mounted outside the headlight)
AiB which look even (at the expense of brightness, they intentionally dim the inside beam so its even with the outer ring), expensive
RD LED, looks ok at night but invisible in the daytime.
OSS, which are damn expensive and at least in my opinion, look ricey due to the lots of small LEDs being lit, its not a ring of light, its a string of lights.
Lux are good but have issues with heat and a lot of people got worried after the recall, also the LED driver has to be installed outside the headlight

honestly, the best option so far are the GP thunders
i still think the best looking ones (after the LCI 2011 LEDs) are the aftermarket angel eyes on the E46 which were CCFL

I got something new in the works, if it works out, you will probably like it, not as bright as HIDs, but brighter then any LED option and even. You'll probably love it.

you should go ahead and install it. so far i have not seen any adverse effects on my angel eye rings. it may be an isolated issue that some users are experiencing.

as long as i dont have any significant discoloration of my rings, i will probably keep the hid kit in my car. i think it looks great. and i like the fact that its so f***ing bright.

i'll keep an eye on my headlights over the next few months and report back if i see anything unusual.

thanks, when i get a chance this weekend i will install them.
i'm thinking to run them with DRL off. hmm, in order to run the angels only while driving, I need to turn the dial one click to the right. headlights + and angels are two clicks to the right?

Thanks for the great posts Alex...

Like you said, I have not heard anything bad about your kit at all. I am just unsure at this point, however you have definitely provided some insight, and I will probably go ahead and install them anyway!

Thanks guys for all of the input!

I should get my Alpines any day now and feel comfortable putting them in. My best advice (as Alex mentioned above) is to save your stock bulbs and if anything happens return the car to stock just to make sure. Sure it's a PIA to take off mods sometimes, but a PIA is better than risking spending thousands of dollars that should have been covered.

just go to the trunk and disconnect the battery directly by using a hex socket to unscrew the battery connection.

the battery is on the right side (passenger side) of the trunk.

just the negative is fine. make sure you put a towel or something around the terminal. you dont want the cable to be touch the battery by accident.

So far I haven't seen any detailed, close-up, white-balanced photos of these "yellowed" or "hazy" or whatever adjective-you-want-to-use inner rings? Can someone who is experiencing this please post them? It is useful to those of us who are assessing the risk/benefit of an HID kit.

Though I wish someone would just break down an LCI non-M E92 headlight assembly and reverse engineer their solution. IMHO if you could achieve that look with a slightly lower color temp and possibly slightly less brightness, it would be ideal.

yes do tell, Ive already tried all the led solutions and Im over them. Your HID kit was going to be next but if something else is coming Id love to see that first. Since Im not really enthused about the HID solution.

Theres got to be a better way.

Ive had Alex' 6000k HID kit on for 3 months now with no issues. My only issue was that they are so bright, people were flashing me at night thinking my highbeams were on. The brighter it is outside, the better they look. My solution to this was a light tint on the headlights from headlightarmor.com. Great product. It looks fantastic. Did exactly what I needed it to do. The product was $50 and my tinter installed it in 5 mins. I gave him $20 for his time. Very happy.
