Question Moving To California & Need Housing Help ...

i will be moving to CA from NY and would like your suggestions on housing. as you can imagine, this is a big change for me and i am both anxious and excited at the same time .

ive only been to CA once a few months ago and was in Venice. the area to me felt like the bronx. i didn't feel comfortable and what bothered me the most was the homeless and the shady weed shops there. Venice was definitely out of my element.

my work is located in Irvine and my budget is ~$1,400 month. ideal location would be a 1 bedroom and 1.5 bath and i would like a drive way or a parking lot.

thoughts & help is much appreciated, thanks guys .

Irvine is much different than Venice, that's for sure. Irvine is a bit of a pricey area so you may need to start looking in the surrounding areas for something to better fit your budget.

Irvine and Venice are diametrically opposed. I would try to get something short term around the Irvine Spectrum area to get your bearings. Stranger in a strange place + a commute can be taxing.

You can try a few luxury apartments in Irvine but you might be looking for around 1500 or so minimum though.

I don't think you can find a place for $1400 in Irvine, unless you get a 2BR and get a roommate.

Do you know how long you'll be moving here for? Maybe it's worth it to buy your own place . Market is favorable, and at least you'll be owning

thanks for the warm welcome guys .

currently, i will be there for 3 months minimum maybe more depending on situation after that. i am looking for an apt/condo or rental home with parking.

another big question i have is, what are some nice towns near irvine i can have a short commute? but the major question is if i live outside irvine, any traffic to work ?

I think one of my friends is commuting from Costa Mesa to his job at Irvine now, I believe he said he couldn't find a place in his budget for around the same price a month. My old apartment in Irvine for 2 years was about $2,200 a month, and that was a 1 bed 1 bathroom with a shared parking structure, no personal driveway. I stayed another 1.5 years in Irvine with 2 friends, which was about $2000 a month for the room itself, it was a 2/2, and that place had shared garages (i.e. 2 cars from 2 different complex in 1 garage), but the quality of the place was considerably worse.

(I move a lot. 14 times in my life and about to go for 15 to Miami. lol)

I don't know about housing in and around the area, but I'd take a look at Costa Mesa, Tustin, Santa Ana, maybe Lake Forest, and if you can do a bit farther, than maybe Garden Grove or Anaheim? A few of my friends live in Garden Grove.

Check out Las Palmas apartments. I bed, 1 bath w garage for that price. Great location! I used to rent there back in the day. Great location off the freeway n the Tustin/Irvine Marketplace off Jamboree

I am one of the few that had lived in Socal all my life and its so nice to not live there anymore. There are so many negatives, I don't even know where to start.

However I would start looking now for a place, literally. Roommates can be sketchy and with $1400 a month budget you will be right in the middle with renting. Be glad its temporary.

I would also suggest around the Irvine Spectrum or Tustin Ranch.

In 2008 I moved from Dublin Ranch in the Bay Area up to Oregon and it went from $2500+ a month to $700 but what came with that price move was a free state.

...look around the older apartments/condos in lake forest or Tustin, anything with a garage. Anything north of irvine is likely to get you a broken car window for a pair of sun glasses you forgot to take with you overnight. That was my experience with north tustin & Santa Ana.

Laguna hills, mission/aliso viejo are also good candidates. You are going to be hard pressed to find anything under $1800 in irvine. I'd recommend hitting up rentalliving.com and just getting an apt through the irvine company even if it does run you $1800+.
