This is easy

Having owned a 2007 335i, 2009 M3, and current owner of 2012 Cayman R and 2013 C63 I have your answer.
The Cayman will be tons of fun to drive-like strapping on a go cart. The power will not be as much as the M3. The Cayman is a daily driver for one. The M3 will feel like a boat after getting out of the Cayman. Luggage space is tight on the cayman so if you see trips in your future get the M3.

+1
I see we have similar tastes in cars. I had an '08 335i before the Cayman S, which is now my DD.

love the look still but having second thoughts here. if they were over 400hp it would be a no brainer but think im looking for lighter weight and higher hp like z06 of gt3

The E9X M3 was a far better car in every respect than the previous generation Cayman.

The new one looks awesome.

However E9X M3 TCO should be far lower (unless you are the type that pays cash for your car). When I was shopping (before I bought my current 2011) I got a quote on a Cayman S. Even with a substantial discount on the Cayman, my M3 has been approximately 1/3 the cost of the Cayman. Don't forget to compare both cars and the financing/lease deals offered by both companies. BMWFS practically gives the M3 away when you compare against other makes..

I beg to differ on that statement. After leaving my 2009 M3 DCT and getting into my Cayman R the difference was staggering. Everything felt so wired in and edgy, super responsive and fun to drive. The only downside I see to a Cayman is lack of trunk space and a back seat. If carrying passengers or luggage is a must then the M3 is the better car. Fun to drive? Not so much. If you never strap on a Cayman R or GT3 you will never know what you are missing. But really the comparison is a GT car (M3) vs a sports car (Cayman platform), not an apples/apples contest.

Actually, I'd say that a stock M3 and the Cayman R are within spittin distance on most tracks.

And a GT-R is faster than my M3. And so is a Z06. but I don't want either one of those...

I absolutely love my M3 but my next purchase will most definitely be the Cayman R. To me it's all about sensation and feel.

You are absolutely correct. I have many track sessions at Eagle's Canyon, Motorsport Ranch and Hallet in my M3 and my current spec boxster race car. A well driven M3 is fast for sure. Close to Cayman R performance. In general the P-car is superior in turns and braking but looses in the straights (down on HP). Of the two the Cayman is way more fun to drive than the M3. But some people like nose heavy, understeering cars

Yes, I have put down the initial down payment on this build-In two months he gets my car and when it returns the motor will have totally new internals and 4.2 L displacement but otherwise completely stock looking. I will be happy with 400 HP, that should transform the CR into real super car performance given that it weighs less than 3000lbs....

i have no track experience in a lighter weight car. you may be correct that the feel of a cayman is more important than the power of something else. my point is i would rather have both. i would not consider a gtr as im not a fan of awd of turbos but would consider a z06 or gt3 as they weigh what a cayman does with 200 and 100 extra hp respectively. choosing my next car is actually very difficult because i could surely be happy with a cayman or exige but dont lust after those as i always have the 911 platform.

If you want to fast around a track a z06 is a lot of car for the money-not a personally rewarding experience IMHO as find the mid engine p cars. As far as weight I think the GTR is around 3800, the Z06 3150 and the cayman 3000-3100 depending on the model.

Never drove the 'R' but have read it is an awesome car. I will say after driving a Cayman S and getting back in the M3, I had the exact reaction (but in the opposite direction as yours), as everything in the M3 felt so wired in and so responsive in comparison. The Cayman felt more like a sports car due to the low seating position but driving it with my foot to the floor was like "This is it? Seriously? WHERE'S THE POWER??"

Also it is a big pain to fit golf clubs in the Cayman which just makes me scratch my head; does Porsche not care about their target demographic?

Yeah, Porsche was worried about hurting the 911 sales if they gave the Cayman the best motor's they were putting in the 911. Imagine a GT3 motor in a Cayman....
I will say the difference between a Cayman S and R is pretty noticable. The S feels softer and less edgy secondary to more relaxed springs and geometry.
There are few motors that pull as well over 5000 rpm as an S65. It is like kicking in four extra cylinders. Really cool on the track on a long straight.

Sure....if you consider a supercharger a "bolt on"

I battled with this very dilemma for almost a year before going with the M3. I drove every c63 m3 and cayman r. Got the m3 and never looked back for the year I have had it. Till the cayman redesign.

Well, price has to factor in there. Porsche has options down to an art form and they add up very quickly unless you have strong will power.

Wait for Cayman Gen 2 (yr. 1) to work out the bugs and little interior / exterior updates they always do with yr. 1 of any car. Enjoy an E92 in the meantime and sell if you have to get the Cayman S yr. 2 model.

I personally would never get a yr. 1 model of any car - there's always something to be fixed, updated, made better.

Yes, insane just how expensive the P cars are when optioned out. Cayman R can hit $85,000 when you load it down.

I really like everything about the 981 cayman except for the engine and depreciation rate compared to the 911. I thought about waiting for one, but when I did my research this summer I looked at how much a boxster S would cost and figured to throw 2 to 3k more to that price and it would be between 80 to 90k so I decided I would look at used 997.2 and used 991.

My gf thinks I should've waited as she thinks the cayman is a way sexier car, but I didn't want to wait that long and I didn't like that caymans depreciate a lot worse than the 911. I hope to keep my car for a long time, but if I ever needed to sell it at least I would have a few more bucks in my pocket.

Porsche should just put a 350 hp engine in the cayman/boxster. No way they put a engine at 400 hp or close to it in the 981, but 350 hp would really be enough for those who those say its too slow. The weight and mid engine platform advantage of the 981 would offset the power advantage that other cars in the sub 100k ball park.

$85k comes pretty quickly. Just for goofs we've optioned up Caymans to the point where the options equalled the starting MSRP, but of course to do that would be insane. I leased my S and the max MSRP you can you to calculate residual (MRM) was right around $80k, which is where I stopped. My car doesn't even have any seat upgrades, Xenon lights, autodimming mirrors or rain sensing wipers. Mine does have PDK, sport chrono, PASM, LSD and heated and cooled seats as well as Nav/Bose. Options on leases get very expensive when you go over that number. Got to pay to play with Porsches.
