Bears vs. Browns

Here are some photos I shot of the game. Many are heavily cropped, while others not so much. I only had one lens and one focal length to work with, but I think they turned out pretty good. I shot these from my seat, which was three rows back around the 20 yard line. Also, bear in mind this is the first time I've shot a football game from so close. Hope you enjoy!

Attack of the white lenses

Scrambling

Tackling

Huddle

Shurmur unhappy

McCoy looking on

Take down

Bolt

Chomps

I would appreciate some comments, criticism, suggestions. In many of the shots, it looked good on the LCD when zoomed in. But, when I brought it up in LR4 the action was blurred. Perhaps I should've bumped up the ISO to 800 and halved my shutter speed. Oh well...

Thanks for looking!

Cool pics, but I assume you could have gone much higher on the ISO with that camera.

yeah, that's true. Unfortunately, Weeden didn't play at all. It would've been nice to see what he could do, even if only for one series.

Yeah. I wish I bumped up the ISO 1-2 stops so I could've gone with a faster shutter speed. I thought that 1/500s to 1/1000s would've been enough, but many times it wasn't.

Well, you stopped the action on the ones that you shared with us. Did you have some blurs on others?

That's what you paid for. Pump the ISO.

Kill off some magenta, 1/500th is a bare minimum starting point and that is if they are standing there. At those distances it doesn't take much movement to get blur. I shot a baseball game and at 1/1500th you could see the blur on the outfield wall. (straight on,IS and no panning involved)

Yeah, I tried to show the best, most interesting ones from the ones I took.

I should've pumped up the ISO to at least 1600. Oh well, it was my first time... you live and you learn.

Yeah, usually for my action shots I use 1/500s at least. So I decided to do that here as well. It looked pretty good when zoomed into the LCD, but in LR4 many were in fact blurry. I'll definitely be shooting at faster shutter speeds next time.

Don't want to hijack your Browns thread, but here are a couple of really nice images.

Remember that 1/1000th is bulb when shooting the jets and ~1/250thto 1/500th for the prop planes. If I had your camera I would try for F8 + 1/2000th+ for the fast passes on the jets.

damn awesome pics. I'll remember your guidelines Kevin. Thanks!

I guess I'll be taking the 24-105mm and the 100-400mm tomorrow.

edit: wait, f/8? Why such a small aperture?

When flying at 500+mph at an angle to you, that will give you more DOF,be sharpest and give you the most leeway in focusing error. If you shoot wide open then your pics will be meh.
Unless you really nail it and get the exposure/focus perfect.
I've got a lot of crappy jet photos but they get better each year.
