Bank of America - availability practically everywhere. Best on-line banking functionality.

One of the best financial institution I've used so far is USAA. They have limited eligibility since their membership is based off of active duty/retired/family members of service members. They have good banking as well as insurance and loan options. For example, you get ATM surcharge refunds every month (up to $15). And debit/credit rewards kick you back a little money every month from your POS transactions. The only drawback is that you won't see their local branches anywhere except if you live in Texas, so many things that you would normally do at your neighborhood bank will be done over the phone or mail with USAA.

In my experience, Bank of America Military Bank was one of the worst banks I've had. A couple of years back when I used their services, they had uncompetitive interest rates for their savings accounts, CDs, and loans. And when I closed out my account with them, it took numerous phone calls and several weeks for me to finally get my remaining balance back. Like I said, this was with Bank of America Military Bank and I don't have any experience with the regular Bank of America, so they may differ.

That's my $0.02.

USAA is the best in the US. At the end of the year I always get a check from them for about 50-60 dollars because they distribute extra earnings among all the members. No other bank will do that.
Additionally, if I need to deposit a check into my account, all I do is scan it at home and viola! it's deposited. To withdraw, ATMs are all over the place.
Customer Service at USAA is top notch.

Additionally, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, IMO is the best bank in the US to get your car loans with. Membership is tricky, but becoming a member of one of the Military family associations for 1 year ($25) gets you in and your loan approved ( if you've got the right credit score) in 1 day.

Wells Fargo isn't nationwide though...I know the East Coast doesn't have Wells Fargo.

Online is RAD. Open up a FREE Checking account and a savings account at the same time online and you'll accrue 5% interest on your savings! Mins? Something like $5 in each account. You can't beat that!

Nobody's said anything about SunTrust. I don't know if you guys have it on the West Coast, but here in TN it's everywhere. As a student they're basically everything I need from a bank, meaning free everything and some sort of account 'forgiveness' which means they don't freak out and charge you if you spend more than you have. Good stuff.

Wamu is good for banking, however, dont ever go in there asking for an auto loan, the person in there wont even check ur credit and tell you "you dont look like u have money so our rates are high.. and decline you"

Commerce is blowing up in the tri-state area especially in and around nyc, Theyre service is great and they make it really easy when doing checking and savings transactions. Also have almost any other accounts you would need even credit cards. I would say go with them.
