1. Parking in a remote corner of the carpark to avoid an adjacent car opening their door into yours
2. In addition to the above point ideally being next to a pillar so only 1 side of the car is potentially exposed
3. Getting in and out of the car (drivers seat) by pushing off the bottom side sill so you dont squish the thigh bolster

I do this too, haha, we're all absolutely insane! I love it.

My buddy sits on a small hand towel so as not to crease/damage his leather with jeans on - might not be a bad idea... Might have to pickup a nice Egyptian cotton black hand towel and follow suit.

If you do, you'll save your leather in addition to having the seats look clean. The leather surface wears down by rubbing dirt and debris around when you sit on it.

I sit on one of those nice, black linen napkins that nice restaurants give you.

I love this thread. I do most of the same thing and I'm sure I'll pick up even more anal habits when I do get my M.

A tip I give friends that they don't really think about is if you HAVE TO park next to another car just make sure its a nicer/more expensive one.

Well, in my defense (and I'm sure others will agree), I did this with all my cars prior to the M3. I had a Honda S2000, a Honda Civic, and an Acura Integra...all significantly cheaper cars.

However, I paid for them with my hard earned money and I took care of them exactly the same as I do with my M3 today. I think the way a person takes care of their possessions is somewhat a reflection upon themselves.

It angered me when my parents (Dad especially) would say something like, "Oh, it's just a car." Umm, it's probably the 2nd most expensive thing you own. What's next? "Oh, it's just a house?" I suppose he's stressing that it's a material item, but so what? Whether it's $10 or $100,000 it's someone's hard earned money, right?

I agree! I was the same way with every car that I've ever owned......from the '94 Ford Escort (..modded! ) to the multiple Civic's (..also modded).

My car has an insert on the left and right side of the trunk liner to close the trunk without leaving prints on the paint. I imagine all the E9*'s have it since even a rental Chrysler 300 (lump) even has it.

Here are a few of mine, but most of you already said them:
- Hand wash ONLY (No exceptions) twice per week
- Absolutely no clutter whatsoever is allowed in the car. The only thing inside the car is my CD case, and in the trunk just the manuals, a microfiber mit to dust the M off, and my snow/ice remover
- Bumper bully gets put on anytime I am forced to park on the street (but immediately taken off before I drive off because I HATE seeing ppl drive around with those damn things)
- Try avoid parking next to other cars
- Wax every other month, but only hand wax and no buffing machine (this causes swirls on your car)
- Completely avoid driving behind construction vehicles since rocks and pebbles are always kicking up
- Do a full inspection of the vehicle after if there have been any passengers in the car

Agreed. Taking care of your car is one thing, but if you're so anal to the point of "cleaning your windows every time you get home", are you really enjoying it?

Everyone has their own quirks, but I would personally be miserable if I did even a tenth of the things mentioned in this thread. I take care of my car, but I strongly believe that at a certain point, you just need to accept that certain things are out of your control, and move on. Otherwise, the car consumes your life.

Had mine handwashed recenly (went thru about 3 or 4 weeks of rainstorm in SoCal, so didn't wash it all during that time) and wound up w/ swirls everywhere. Was just stunned. But, they fixed it & made it right by giving me a $200 complete detailing/wax job the next day.

Indeed. And, it helps if it's a lease.

I've been in plenty of houses where people seemed to have that attitude and it's disappointing.
