The issue could be aerodynamic.
Had BMW change a windshield once (not on my present car.) All OEM parts and dealer install, but the trim was installed slightly off. As a result, the car would whistle between 60-65MPH!

Update for future searchers:

The issue is definitely from the differential; to be more specific, it's caused by the LSD pinion bearing. If you car is making this noise, then you need to bring it to BMW ASAP. If the car is under warranty, they replace the entire Diff as they don't bother with rebuilding any more.

If you are out of warranty then you have the option to rebuild, but BMW does not sell any of the internal parts; so parts need to be sourced directly from the manufacturer.

Which dealership did you get the final verdict from?

Thanks for the update. Well now I'm worried. I'm almost certain I hear a whine/whistle from day 1. Don't know if its because of this thread but I believe is more noticeable now, or at least thats my impression. During your search on the subject, did you came across a video or recording of the sound?

I don't have any recording of it now. I did come across one in youtube, but can't seem to find it. I'll try to record it tonight and post it up. PM me if you need more info.

Update:
This is the sound.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post the vid!!! Really appreciate it. I'm 98% sure that this is not the noise my car makes. If I'm not mistaken in my car it happens in low RPM's (1500 -2000) in 3rd, 4th and 5th and continue to happen even if off the throttle. But will confirm tomorrow. Thanks again!!

I seem to have the same sound you may be having, its more of a higher pitched sound, almost electronic sounding, only under throttle, and only at lower RPMs. It not the diff.

Mine has a kind of screaming sound when under WOT (it's NOT just the engine or the wife, funny guy!).

In my case noise is more noticeable in 5th at approx 2k rpms. Took the car to the dealer. Chief tech took a drive with me and heard the sound. PUMA case was opened. The checked transmission, differential, bearings, etc. It was NOT the differential in my case. Sound source pinpoint to transmission (DCT). Transmission checked, multiple tests were done (pressures, clutches, fluid, etc). Result: normal operating condition/normal operating sound. As I have said before, I believe I hear this sound from day one. I think I'm to paranoid with my M. However, no harm in getting the car checked at the dealer. Hope this helped.

+1 on paranoia

I'm only a few weeks in on my M3 but I have learned not to chase noises. I used to chase noises on my first corvette. I quickly learned to "let it break" or get so bad that the problem is easily identified. I had a popping in one of my wheels and after several U-Joint changes (because every mechanic said "definitely U-Joint") the noise was still there... I was so fed up with it finally said "EFF IT, let the wheel fall off" and just dealt with the noise... nothing ever came of it and eventually sold the car. Truth is, when mechanics are chasing noises they are guessing at the expense of your checkbook...

I have a appt set-up at the local dealer for next week, but was curious to see if anyone have gone through this or have a clue on what's going on.
