M3's come with alarm's correct?

Buddy picked his black one up yesterday and says that there is no light flashing or no indication of an alarm (no blinking light, etc)...short of breaking a window what does the M3 come with?

No, they come pre-wired for the alarm. You can buy a BMW alarm, install it yourself, but you'll need to have the dealer service department turn it on.

It is prewired for an alarm. The alarm is not a standard feature, it is installed by the dealer or by the owner, but is not installed by the factory. Supposedly it is very easy to install the alarm on your own. However the dealer must "turn on" the alarm in the car's computer.

No, not the complete system, though it is prewired. You must add part no. 65 12 0 403 658, which includes the "interior ultrasonic motion sensor" and the "alternate power siren/tilt sensor". List price is $311, but I got mine from Circle BMW for $235 + shipping. Installation takes about an hour to do yourself (pretty easy), or you can pay your dealer 1.5 - 2 hours labor. Once installed, the "clown nose" will blink, but the alarm must be coded by the dealer before it is fully functional (I will get mine done at first service). The system senses the hood, trunk or door opening, jacking, or interior motion. The one on my E46, which was similar, worked well and never falsed.

This is a must in my opinion. Had it installed before picking it up at the BMW Performance Center (cost me $300 with FREE labor) and it's great. Love the audible lock confirmation (would be going back to the car every other time to check if it didn't have that), plus the fact that it's more secure with an alarm and if I'm ever walking in a dark parking lot or something, I have that extra security of attracting attention should someone approach me.

I assume the car key/fob has to be coded also?

No, just the main control module.

I have to ask if anyone even pays attention to car alarms anymore. It seems like most people ignore them and don't even bother looking in your direction if the alarm is going off.

This car must be pretty hard to steal/hotwire with the digital encoding.

Can the clown nose still be programmed to blink without an alarm when the doors are locked as in the E46?

I pay atention to them, usually. And if it's in your driveway or garage, you sure would. You're not going to hotwire this car, but flatbedding or jacking to remove wheels is possible.

If you have BMW Assist (in the US) and your car gets stolen, they can track it for you to find out where it is.

P.S. If you also elect for the heated seat options then they can have the seat give an electrical shock to the driver.

I'm not positive, but I believe the car must be turned on to track it. If it get's flatbedded to a chop shop I don't think that works, unlike Lojack.

The car must be turned on - and it must be outside where it can get receiption to be tracked. If it's in a garage or under a bridge - no go.
