Trunk lid unlocked while driving!

I was driving tonight and it was pouring rain (major thunderstorm). I get to a red light and I hear a pop from the back. I drive off not knowing what it was. The car then beeps to tell me my trunk is opened. I stop and close the trunk. Then I drive off and it does the same thing 3 other times... The last time I left it opened until I got home (I was tired of getting soaked when getting out of the car!)

Has this ever happened to any of you? It's a 2011 M3 coupe.

I did some searches on the net and the only thing I could find was faulty wires being the culprit...I doubt it. The car is in excellent condition. I also thought it could be the key in my pocket while driving (the trunk button being pressed accidentally) but I took it out of the pocket and it still happened...

Any ideas?

Did you kick the trunk release inside the car?

No. I assume you mean the little button on the left side of the driver's footwell.

If this all happened while underway it's really quite odd. AFAIK the buttons on the remote and the footwell do not work when you're moving. Maybe you do have an electrical issue.

Edit: just saw you were stopped at a light, did it always happen right after you stopped the car?

Yeah near the OBD2 port.

OP - this happened to me once as well. Light came on, I stopped the car and closed the trunk which had popped open. It never happened again so I have not bothered to investigate further.

FWIW: Events occurred immediately after getting into the car from the beach, to which we carried beach furniture, towels etc. in the trunk. We also opened and closed the trunk a few times while there.

Please keep us updated, and I'll do the same if it happens again.

Next time, open the glove box and you will see a little trunk lock switch. Lock the trunk. It could be water is messing with the trunk button in the trunk. The switch prevents the trunk from opening.

Nullrouted: yes, as soon as the car came to a complete stop at the light.

Jwaggen: it hasn't happened today so far. I'm now thinking more and more that it was water related.

Did you have anything in the trunk that was possibly getting snagged on the emergency release?

If the key is in your pocket, sometimes it pops the trunk when you sit down. I have had it happen several times. -WS

That's exactly what I was thinking. Had this happen to me in my X3 a couple of times.

I've heard of pocket pool, but this is ridiculous.

I've had both windows roll down while driving, CA at its best. You'd think they'd disable things like this while the car is in motion.

Got really worried at the time until I realized I was sitting on the keyfob.

This has happened to me 3 times since owning the car and it was due to driver error. I had the keys in my pocket and for whatever reason my pants triggered it. Like butt dialing. I didn't mean too but it accidentally depressed the trunk release button while sitting and driving. Easy fix.

Finally got it repaired. The trunk opening mechanism was affected by corrosion so the dealer replaced it under warranty. I'm waiting for the next downpour to test it out!
