Yesterday a DCT M3 Outshifted a Ferrari 430
... even though I dont track the car, I enjoy a weekly pleasant cruise to see what cars it would pull. Yesterday wasnt any different, whats different was seeing a brand new yellow Ferrari heading twds Springfield Interchange. It was a sight to see as I caught up next to him while being followed by a charcoal G35i sedan. I sense that the Yellow Ferrari would be South bound and decided to do the same because its not too offen that this things happen. The Ferrari passenger saw my approach and immediately took note that I was in the new e92 M3. It maybe his first to see one because his smile was as wide as mine and soon his driver friend joined that special moment. As our cars cruise down South side by side we felt that something special is about to happen over the wide long stretch of on the horizon.
As the 95 South on-ramp was fast approaching so was the G35i sedan on my rear view mirror. The G35 backseats passengers ass were unglued to witness an ad-voc event unfolding before their eyes and faces stuck in on the windshield. They had the best seat in the house, as they were observed as nervous giggling school girls with an anticipation of a conflict settlement about to unfold. I checked that my M button was set and geared correctly on S5 as I followed the Formula One contender. I didnt let go of his rear end as he rev-down behind a the SUV. We were both boxed in the fast lane waiting for the SUV complete his pass of a 18 wheeler on the right lane. Yes, a little far behind on this 2 laner was still the G35i. Soon as the SUV cleared the 18wheeler, an immediate right lane change by the ferrari was excuted as I followed behind and snatch a quick S4 downshift to past him on the left. I felt a very responsive kick shift which left the Ferrari behind. I sense that the M3 outshifted the Ferrari in that very critical short time frame and left him a short distance behind. I observed the Ferrari attempted to recover but recovery he would not since the the M was already away towards very generous high rev band. Thank you BMW!

I could not readily distinguished as to what Ferrari the M3 outshifted, but I do know its not a Modena, nor a Spider and definitely not an ENZO. In my curriosity afterwards I research
the Ferrari site and try to recall to try to make sense of it all. Trying to recollect the vision it can only resemble a F430 at best Was it possible ?

LOL - It's people like you who are responsible for the bad reputation of M3 drivers Stuff like this belongs on a track.
And: As much as I like my M3, I would never claim to be faster than a F430; just read the power to weight figures... |

No kidding. Some believe that the M3 is faster than most super cars. As if a milli-second better shift will prove the M3 a winner. A 430 will crush the M even with a slightly (very slightly) inferior (F-car) transmission.

nice imagination, but did you ever consider that the F car didn't want to push it at all... I find most F drivers are real wusses when it comes to extracting full peformance and I was definitely one of these wusses.

Or maybe F drivers know better than to engage in street racing? Maybe he was just toying with this guy. When I had my Porsche, prior to the M3, I'd get all sorts of clowns riding on my bumper or using other "methods" in hopes of trying to engage me in a race on the highway or street. I knew I could beat them easily, and that street racing is stupid, so I'd just let them pass by all excited...Who knows what stories they may have posted on other forums?

Who gives a shit. I guess it makes you happy since you don't own an Italian exotic and drive a mass produced, see 'em every day, car instead. This sort of stuff is so lame.

I would guess you had a fall in with a 360 and not a 430 because the F430 would eat you up for breakfast. A properly driven F430 can accelerate to 100mph in the middle eights were as the M3 really requires ten seconds.
That is a world apart in performance terms. |

A 360 is no match for a DCT M3, but I don't think the difference in acceleration between the DCT M3 and a F1 F430 are as great as most would like to believe

May I ask, have you driven either of the Ferraris in anger. I have, both of them on the track and I too own a DCT M3, trust me when I tell you that while the BM is a match for the 360 it is miles behind the 430, miles behind.

You couldn't be farther from the truth. A F430 does 0-100 around 8.4s and the e9x M3 does it in around 10s flat. That is bus lengths at those speeds...

Which, now that I think about it, is about the same difference in the 0-100 time of an e9x M3 and e46 M3...

it was so surreal looking at the data sheets after...
shows the F as .60 secs F1 tranny vs .004 secs DCT maybe that explains it and his ill preparedness of what I was about to happen then ... we were back legal shortly after and never had a chance to give him a to his true exotic
