Congrats on the new M3. I test drove two demo M3s and came to the same conclusion as you.

Note to 335 drives avoid test driving the M3, gets you every time. Took the M out and the 335 was traded right after...should have just bought it in the first place instead of losing my money!

But I totally understand where the OP is coming from. I just got the Dinan flash on my 335i and while the torque makes for ridiculous mid range thrust, it sort of highlights the limitations of the stock 335i chassis and rear end. Corners come up in a much bigger hurry and you really miss the telepathic tracking the M cars have. I traded an E39 M5 for the 335i, so I have a pretty decent perspective. It isn't that the 335i is incompetent; it just doesn't make love to the road the way the M3 does.

If economy is the issue then none of these cars really fits the bill. I loved my tuned 335. I actually preferred it to my previous e46 M3. The M3 is just on another level as far as a total package. I had it on the track last week and it is sweet. It is so much fun to drive, and fun is what I am paying for. Further, the dct transmission makes a very average driver like myself that much better. The Z06 Corvette really didn't do it for me. It had a lot of power, speed and torque, but I didn't get the feeling I was driving a really fine machine. All resale issues aside I wouldn't dream of trading my M3 for the Z06. It just felt like a fiberglass car riding on a fiberglass frame. And while it is true that the M3 eats gas, on the highway I can get 27mpg. The best I ever got in my stock 335 on the highway was 30.

As an owner of a 07 335i E92 and an 08 335i E92 I agree with some of the post here that the difference in price does not match the performance between the two. Maybe BMW shoot themselves in the foot introducing the Twin Turbo Engine. Remember that when the E46 came out no other BMW 3 series could compare the performance of the M3. Now you have a in-line six biturbo engine that is very close to the V8 in the 2500 to 5000 powerband. And I believe that a piggybacked E92 would keep up very well with the V8. I have driven the E92 M3 and to tell you the truth I was not impressed. There is not Wow effect and it feels heavy. I would have liked to see a V10 option.
This is just my personal opinion and I know that I will own an M car in the near future. No need to feel defensive. We are here because we love the brand. |

+1 on your observations. However, with warranty issues aside a chipped E9X 335i will maybe only match the M3 in drag races. As for the V10, I can see why BMW didn't detune it and put it in the M3 because then then there would be absolutely no reason to get a M5 |

My 335i is great, it's a fantastic good looking satisfying car but for some reason it just doesn't excite me. I've thought about modding it but OTOH, I think I'll just wait for the E92 M3 to get Cinnamon interior.

Don't mod the 335i, just get the M3. I thought long and hard about it and it makes neither financial nor performance sense. Maybe if you are in love with a torquey turbo, but otherwise the M3 should match a modded 335i while still offering the feel that you won't get in a modded 335i, the sound of the V8, the better leather, the better looking exterior, better gearbox, etc etc.

As you mentioned both cars are good but catered for different purpose and drivability. |
