What Lamborghini thinks about turbo cars and a more "green" future

Not sure if this belongs here, but I thought most of us E9x M3 owners would like to read this.

http://www.motortrend.com/future/fut...mborghini.html

Quote:
Turbo or hybrid Lamborghini?
Normally, you talk about turbochargers when you think about downsizing, and downsizing is something that is difficult for a super sports car [manufacturer] like Lamborghini to think about at this moment. I think it is against the heritage of the DNA of the flagship like Aventador. The turbo is something...but at the end, the really sportive car is naturally aspirated. If you are a good engineer, you are able to achieve the best performance without using boost. And for us, the challenge that we have is to be the best. To have the best means to use the best possible, that means the flow efficiency of the intake manifold, of exhaust, reduce the backpressure...everything in the best way. If we talk about [a] hybrid solution, it is the same discussion. We want to use everything in order to achieve our target of reduction of the CO2 of 35 percent compared with 2007. To reach this, you must maintain the DNA. If you put 400 kilograms [880 pounds] of batteries it will be difficult to have a car that can be able to run with handling that we want.

The 2021 Aventador?
If I close my eyes, I want to retain the DNA of Lamborghini, but I want also to be more and more aggressive in the CO2 reduction and fuel consumption. I must think something like this: Cylinder deactivation-we have 12 cylinders, but if I can use in the town three, four, six...if I can have some energy storage, something like this, can be another opportunity. But what is important is to maintain the DNA of Lamborghini. If when I want to open the throttle body, I push the accelerator, I must have 12 cylinders that push me from behind. I must hear the noise. If I don't have this, it is finished emotionally for Lamborghini. And if it's finished emotionally, then there is no sense for Lamborghini to exist.

-Maurizio Reggiani, Research and Development Director at Automobili Lamborghini, s.p.a.

They'll be facing a lot of fines in the future in order for them to sell their cars in the US. While we all disagree with the direction they are going in, you can bet the next generation M3 will blow the doors off the competition....yet again. It took 4 years for everyone to catch-up, a tad bit too late, I think.

I like their stance. Hope to be able to afford one someday. A guy can dream, can't he?

i totally agree with this...i know its not in the same league as a lambo but i've owned a couple corvette Z06's and have switched to a ZR1 and can honestly say, the ZR1 is an absolute monster but no where near as passionate or as raw as the Z06

How did you like the Z06? how was the handling compared to M3? what didn't you like about the ZR1?
I am asking cause the rumors around the new C7 have it that we could be looking at a 10K RPM V8,,,if that is the case, I will have to test drive it (at least).

I am a big fans of manuals. I have one in my M3. But.....as supercar power levels and torque continue to rise, automated clutch-based transmissions and all-wheel drive are almost a necessity for safety and control on the street. We are seeing street cars with power and torque figures that were only seen in race cars not too long ago. There was a time when 300hp was big power. Now, most heavyweight sports cars and luxury cars are topping 500hp and some over 600hp. Most drivers, even skilled ones can not properly manage all this power properly in street driving conditions all this time.

The M3's level of power is about as much as I would really ever like to have for street driving without awd and/or an automated gearbox of some sort. And, if the motor in the new M3 becomes a high torque turbo monster, I will likely opt for an automated gearbox as well.

There comes a point where it is just too much power for a manual transmission IMO.

No they won't. They're a niche carmaker, they'll either get exemptions or they'll increase the prices of their cars to compensate for the additional taxes. Besides, the US market is old news. Asia is where it's at now.

I think he was being facetious. Back on topic, more car companies should adhere to that philosophy. The concept of identifying your products' DNA and maintaining it in all future development is a practice that I feel the M division has forgot.

I thought I read that the Corvette will have a few engine options on this round and one is a high-revving, low displacement v8. The big displacement engine will still be there though. I'm looking for the article and will post it when I find it.

Here it is: http://www.autosavant.com/2011/05/26...-cam-turbo-v8/

Where did you hear this? I find it hard to believe based on their heritage and history of big displacement V8 or now FI v8 for big power (a la zr1).

A high revving engine would crap on the fuel economy that they already are known for, let alone improve on it. Don't get me wrong, if they do it I would be the first to get it, I think the c7 will be a ridiculous performer. Already barely anything can touch a c6 and it is near 7 years old
Fuzzybam just posted a link to an article about that which is not where I read it. Meaning 2 different sources mentioned the 10K RPM. It could be true!!

I appreciate where they are coming from and think there is a hell of a lot of truth for their basis of a "true sports car" being n/a. Only wish I could afford the new aventador...

i loved my '08 Z06....it was my favorite drivers car i have ever had...if you had the talent it would do whatever you wanted....i would say it would edge the M out in handling but if you put a novice driver in both cars he would get a lot more out of the M...i still have the ZR1 as my weekend car and it's a complete beast...theres nothing i don't like about the car other then the regular complaints, interior.....that big stupid clear square in my hood, blah,...it does everything better then the Z06 but its a lot more refined...the Z06 always seemed as if it was trying to kill you and i kinda liked that...
