I don't think the GTR is all that unrefined. A porsche GT3 is more crude/less refined. It certainly doesn't have the same level of luxury the Vantage you were referring to in the earlier post, but then again the Vantage doesn't have near the performance. It's a luxo sport cruiser-different category. That doesn't do much for me. Don't get me wrong, I care about a balance of performance and styling/refinement. If I didn't like the way it looked, I wouldn't buy it. However, performance come first in my book.
I agree. The GTR looks aren't for everyone, but it does stand out. When you look at a GTR, you know it's a GTR. I had my car parked outside a gas station yesterday, and this guy in a G37 pulls into the gas station and couldn't keep his eyes off my GTR.

When one closely inspects an F car, it's quite evident why it costs more. Believe me, I know. Everything from the engine to the seats and dashboard components, esp. in the late model cars, is made to look extravagant yet sporty.

Yes, but to be fair, he is more than likely a Nissan/Infinity fanboi. GTR's don't have the presence of a Vantage or similar "exotic". I certainly feel that the hype surrounding the GTR has waned, and it's cool factor is likewise receding.

I also saw an LFA in Sanfran last weekend and was not that impressed. For 500k, I would want something that looks super exotic.

Possibly. The GTR isn't exotic like a Vantage or similar cars, but the GTR is relatively rare. I've seen more aston martins on the road than GTR's, and I live in Boston.

+1

Definitely less GTRs than Aston, Ferrari and other exotics around here. The people who buy those cars are probably into them for the image. The GTR buyer is definitely in it for all out performance, they aren't bought for exclusivity or prestige.

You can argue the heritage of the GTR is pretty great too with a lineage of performance cars that take on the world's best ever since the 1970s.

Well, the two "reasonable" cars that may have been able to beat the GTR were not there.

Porsche 911 turbo S
Corvette ZR-1

And WTF were the Cayman, Stang, Lotus, Bimmer doing in this test anyway? Not even in the same league.

The review that the video is associated with is the "Best Driver's Car" which doesn't always mean the best performance.. that's why they were included.

The drag race was just for fun since they had all the cars present.

Here's a nice video of what a modded GT-R can do.

1200whp AMS GT-R vs 1200whp Underground Racing Gallardo Twin-Turbo in Russia.

+1. They just wanted to drag race the cars they felt worthy of Best Drivers Car. They did it for entertainment. Many people simply have a big chip on their shoulder toward the GTR and love to nitpick the car any chance they get. However, if a single negative comment is made toward the M3, all of which are false , there are like 50 posts defending the car stating it's the best of both worlds, etc. Then again, this is the M3 forum. Automotive egos can be very strong.

Now that you've talked the OP out of buying one. Please talk me out of buying the 2013 GTR with 570+ bhp. I just called my dealer and have first dibs on the car when it arrives. Does anyone have a clue as to when the 991 GT3 will arrive?

Here's what it would take for me to buy a GTR:

1. Front fascia and air damn that doesn't look so choppy and piecemeal in it's design

2. Better insulation from the noise of the turbos

3. Interior gauge graphics that don't look like they belong on a toy car

4. Egoist (currently Japan only option) interior as standard

5. Smoother and more fluid overall dash design

6. Higher grade interior plastics

7. Premium leather seats

8. About 3 inches length cut off the rear of the car

9. Rear of the car redesigned with a more tapered in butt..like a 370Z

10. More aesthetically pleasing rear lower valence, not something that looks so boy-racer.

11. A rear wing that doesn't look like a cheap aftermarket add-on

12. A sensible looking exhaust...C'mon.....4x5" tips from a single pipe. Isn't that a bit ridiculous?

13. How about a better sounding exhaust from the factory?

14. Sound insulation and/or a transmission design that doesn't sound like it's broken

15. Better looking wheels

16. Brakes in some other color other than puke gold

17. A real street setting for ride comfort.

Do these things and I will be all over a GTR.

I'm sure all these things can be done but are you ready to fork over $200K for a Nissan GT-R? People in Japan already pay $200K for the V-spec versions of the GT-R. I'm sure if people in the USA are ready to pay as much, they can sell premium versions of the GT-R.

The reason a lot of these things aren't done or lacking is because of budget constraints and the fact that there is no market for a $100K+ GT-R in the USA. The GT-R's purpose is to beat the Porsche 911 Turbo at a price far lower than the 911 costs. Once you rise above 911 turbo costs, it's hard to justify.

To be fair, it's not a straight line car.
Very tactile. Great feedback. Loves to go fast in the areas where others have to slow down.
I'd take one before most of the other cars in that line-up, just for the fun factor.
That said, what's feels good isn't always what goes fast - and some people's fun is fast.
And THAT said, the evora will feel like you're going faster [than the others] at any given speed. You just have to ignore the other cars passing you.

Are you just fockin with me, jk? Did Nissan really announce a 570 HP GTR?

Anyway, the 991 GT3 should arrive between 2 -2 1/2 years. Consider that the 991S has been announced yet we will not see them until Feb 2012. The GT cars typically arrive 18 months after that. We should have facts and real views in roughly 18 months, imo.

Considering what Porsche did with the 991S, I expect the 991 GT3/RSs to be remarkable.

Sure some of these things may, or may not, make for a better GTR, but some will add weight; and it's already heavy enough, and others to the cost. As you said, there is a reason the GTR is priced as it is. I have read that Nissan was losing money on this car. Not sure if that is still the case with all of the price hikes but I wouldn't be surprised.

Good. If I get the new GTR the GT3 will arrive at a perfect time.

I was tempted just a week ago when my Porsche dealer had a GT3 RS on the floor with 1500 miles on it. I think it was a 2010 a guy traded in on a GT3 RS 4.0. I would have been all over it if they wanted $115K-$120k but they wanted $150K. They were F#@king high.

I bet they're gonna keep tuning it higher and higher, to keep the pressure on Porsche while they can.

Considering that the new 911 (vanilla) is as fast as the outgoing GT3 around the ring, I expect the new turbo to be blazing.

Maybe the GTR will do to Porsche what the NSX did to Ferrari : make them start making better cars - ones more deserving of the price tag.
