loud rattle on startup

almost had a heart attack.. went to start it after sitting for about 24 hours.. started and immediately made a loud rattling noise.. almost like if you've ever accidentally tried to start an already-started car. lasted a second at most, short enough where i didn't even get a chance to shut it off. sounded perfectly fine afterwards, no lights, no issues, and started right up a second time.

read something about possible rattling timing chain tensioners? could it be the starter not disengaging? other ideas?

Negative . In '2012 it was a PUMA case and the rattle noise was fixed by replacing the Vanos Gears ..
Client reports at 'Irvine BMW a rattle noise on cold starts :

This is correct, big ticket item to blame.

I’ve had the noise off and on for the past 2 years. Anecdotally it depends on how much I drive it - got less frequent when I fixed all oil leaks and gaskets.

I remember coming across the thread from ///M Power-Belgium pasted and also saw speculation about the cam to adjuster gasket leaking, causing the noise.

I know deansbimmer sells refurbished units and may be my play when I rebuild this 165k engine after M539 does his so I know what to focus on 😂😂😂

so the thread linked says there's no solution (unless i'm misreading it), you guys are saying I need new vanos gears, somewhere in that thread Malik says it's just the starter disengaging late, NBD...

sigh.

fwiw, didn't happen this morning, but the car only sat for 12 hours this time.

ha. paranoid security cams to the rescue -- actually caught the noise on video it turns out. definitely sounds more starter related (and just as terrifying the second time around as the first). fun starts around 0:20
