i don't know how salvageable a block with a disintegrating bearing is. i do know how salvageable a block with a hole in its side because it threw the rod out is. keep driving, you'll find out too.

I would imagine they would tell you, first of all, to stop driving the car. But hey, lets put another 1000 miles on it to see if the oil smells of gas again. And then you drive another couple of weeks till you have time to do the "bottom end".
Dude, your actions here are simply not in line with reality. You do not continue to drive a car with metal shavings in the filter, you do not continue to drive a car that may have suffered hydrolock and with fuel diluting the oil. You just don't do these things. Ok, I am done feeding the trolls. Good luck.

If you only have 1 car and need it to get to work then you probably should treat it better by not driving it when there is an issue. Like others have said drop it off at a shop and download UBER. If that sounds expensive then make sure you're sitting down for when they tell you how much it will cost to replace your engine.

Glitter in the oil is a sign of bearing wear. If there is no rod knock, stop driving the car and you could save it.
Do a rod bearing change and engine flush a few times, then pray no particles are stuck in the vanos or other areas and the engine runs good after. If you want to go the extra mile, remove the oil cooler and lines and flush the glitter out of them also. That is the cheapest route. A more effective route would be to do a full engine rebuild. Take apart the vanos and flush all metal particles out, send both the heads and block out to get hot tanked/cleaned. That should ensure any particles are out of the engine.

That’s moronic. I would just sell the car as is before a rod knock happens and get way more than I would from a part out.

Just ordered bearings and connecting rod bolts. Looks like I got shit to do next weekend. Hopefully it saves it. Do you think the crankshaft is still good? Should I spend the extra money on tools or is pladtiguage good enough |

I don’t need a shop. Maybe you don’t work on your own car and need a shop to work on yours but I don’t. A shop is going to charge me thousands for a diagnostic I can do myself. According to you everyone is a troll that doesn’t do as you say huh? |

I use Techron fuel system cleaner after every 2 fillups at Costco.
No issues daily driving and at the track. I run my engine pretty hard too!

Asking a forum for advice and then ignoring it is a wast of time for everyone involved. A used S65 is going to run you $8k plus the time to change it. That pays for a lot of Uber rides… But, you do you doode. You do you.

What happened to the OP?
I tried this myself. Poured a 10 oz bottle of techron and filled it back up. Drove it on a highway for 4 hours, 80 mph. Did an oil change. No metal shavings found. I still have the UO and just checked tonight. It reeked of techron, so it is good that I changed the oil right away. I had a problem with carbon buildup. After that lengthy drive, I can feel a significant improvement in the performance of my engine (Toyota Hybrid, not BMW). The engine sounds quieter. |

dead thread or not, i'd love to know what actually happened. on the one hand guy is ready to go and pull the bottom end, on the other hand doesn't seem to have a grasp on the severity of the situation.

lmao in owning BMWs for over 15 years, this is my first time hearing that techron fuel injector will cause rod bearing failure. the OP's rod bearings were on their way out to begin with.

That's what I was going to say. It happened to me years ago with an '89 Corvette I used to have. Back then I had to change the computer but that cost me nothing because my father in law owned a junkyard. Took the computer off a Z28 and change the chip and there she went. Obviously had to change the oil. In my case, when they put it on the tow truck, fuel came out of the exhaust in the back. I thought for sure I was screwed.
