I am also PPG certified w/ regards to refinishing to include waterborne systems re: education also. Anymore questions for me? edit: Waterborne clear is still "newer" tech.. Municipalities (where allowed) were still using a solvent based clear over the base coat (waterborne). This may be changing now, but again I'm not so much involved w/ ref anymore. |

Not saying that the wet sanding is not true ...I just want to know the source of the info if it is.
Also, have you done any auto body work as to painting before?

MB has also been using ceramic clearcoat for some time and a "self-healing" clearcoat which has the ability to "heal" itself from minor car wash scratches, etc. |

Next time, I would suggest that you don't tell people that they are "totally wrong" with out facts or experience. That was my point.

BMW does use a powder clear coating process. Use your best friend ....google. I've seen the process on a documentary where the body of the car powder clear coated and put into a large autoclave.

I've actually painted in a booth (an actual car!!). Your knowledge apparently comes from documentaries lol! edit: just read your link.. That's still not powdercoating in the traditional form. Keep reading. I'm done, I have better things to do on a Friday night that argue w/ 20 yr olds on the interwebz. |

You're right I don't know everything, but I thought this forum would have more people who had basic automotive understanding/skills. I offer my 2 cents like everyone else and I get, "where, why? How do you know? Have you ever painted before? WTF is that supposed to mean LOL? People here constantly ask about oil/temps/ why does my Supercharge whine... etc. etc. etc. So do I come off like a dick sometimes? Sure.. I don't intend it so sorry if you're offended (sincere); however, I do have some credentials as well as ALOT of prior built cars by myself that can speak for themselves as to what "I know" Last edited by s85e90; 09-05-2014 at 08:50 PM.. |

And just to put a stop to my apparent falsities, I just googled, "Lexus Ls460"
Straight from Wikipedia: "The model's new paint finish is applied to bare-metal body panels which are first prepared by a six-axis buffing robot with 3D movements,[8] the entire paint finish is wet-sanded twice by hand between layers of paint application". |

But I digress, you're right and I should relax.. I'm just over tired and frustrated prob not to mention emotion is hard to convey via written word. No need to get riled up... I always try to remember this: "As much as you think you know, everyone single person you meet knows 1 thing that you may not" It's very humbling. Cheers |

Lexus does NOT sand their cars from factory. They do in fact have orange peel, which is obvious on every Lexus. Lexus is mass produced, they do not have time/money to do it. It is that simple. Lexus orange peel is much better than every major (mass) produced car. My source- I paint for a living. It may be possible that Lexus only does sand the LS, as these seem to have much less than other Lexus' but I cannot say for sure. |
