EDIT: Rolex was hand-built in early 1900s, then robots replaced humans, but Rolex kept its status symbol

Even if some of Rolex' assembly is automated, that doesn't mean the watches are overpriced or overrated. They are still a very well made, high quality product. Rolex is one of the only names in the business who makes their own movements. There are many high end watches out there that cost a lot more than a Rolex. Are they overpriced?

Well Buddy, I just happen to own a 1989 vintage Submariner that I bought new, which just had only its second overhaul in 22 years. It still keeps great
time and looks brand new. By the way- cost in '89? $1700! Now? Last I checked, $5800. Now thats a good investment.

Most Rolex assembly in automated. The assembly is excactly the same as other good watches. Orient makes its own movement....

I am not saying Rolex is bad, its just Orient (for example) is the same....many expensive watches are actually hand-built thats the reason why they are expensive. You like Rolex, you have money, you buy Rolex....

I would not compare Rolex to Orient. Orient watches are perfectly fine but the quality of parts and finish cannot compare to Rolex and other high end brands.

Few luxury watches these days are truly "hand built". I don't know how you define the term but in truth you should say hand finished not built. All movement parts are made on CNC machines and finished in the higher end watches (PP, VC, AP, etc...) by hand. Decoration on high end watch movements is by hand with specialized machines. Rolex has minimal decoration on their movements.

You pay a lot for a Rolex because that's what the market will bear. They hold their value in the long term which makes them a good investment.

i dont know if you are a jeweler, but i personally cannot comment on quality of parts. i do know that even pro watch collectors have hard time telling a difference between good rolex fakes and original.

Maybe at first glance, but most horologists can tell the difference very quickly. As for the quality of parts, the Orient watch you provided the link to (which is a very nice looking watch) is water proof up to 150 feet. A Rolex Submariner is water proof up to 1000 feet. Now, does one need that difference...probably not. It does however, show the difference in craftsmanship. (Not unlike a Camaro and an Aston Martin) I'm not putting either of them down, just pointing out there is a big difference in quality. Whether or not the price justifies the difference is purely subjective.

I'm simply pointing out (as did Michael Schott) that there is no comparison in quality between an Orient and a Rolex. It doesn't imply the Orient is "junk", just that there is a far greater difference in quality than you seem to infer.

Incorrect sir. I believe you mean 300 meters, which is equivalent to 1000 feet. That's the depth rating for most modern Rolex Submariners.

I'm not a jeweler but I've been a participant of a premier watch forum for over 10 years and a moderator on same for over 5 and have owned dozens of fine watches including Rolex and Orient.

We are not talking about fakes but if you put a recent vintage Rolex next to an Orient you can instantly tell the difference. And Rolex is hardly the gold standard for fine finishing. The point is that there is a noticeable difference between a $300.00 Orient which is a great watch for the money by the way and a $5000.00 Rolex, Cartier or IWC.

Submarines is the key word here, all other Rolex are 300ft. Most dive watches are 200-300 meters.....1000ft

You are right that WR is not necessarily an indicator of quality and there are inexpensive watches with good WR. WR is about how well the watch can handle the pressure of a dive and how well it's sealed.
