500 hp

I'm sure someone will eventually figure it out but it will not be easy. Heck cams and injectors require you to crack the motor and already that is not "easy". You have to remember this is a 60k car with parts that are priced stratospherically and often times take a while to obtain. Its not like a MOD powered Mustang where if you break something while poking around you just go down to the local Ford dealership and buy one from stock.
Well you have to get into the heads but not sure if that qualifies as "cracking". Doesn't that generally mean opening up the lower end? Either way I agree that cams, injectors, exhaust and intake won't get you 80 hp. You may get close to that but you'd also probably destroy the driveability and much of the DD ability of the car.

P.S. I have done all of those things to my E36 (less cat elimination) and it is simply too much, just like the go cart stiff aftermarket suspension I've done. All my engine mods should have got me about 50 hp. My 0-60s are fair but the G tech doesn't show nearly as many ponies as I expect....

I guess, maybe. Point is its going to be a lot more work than just some bolt-ons.

I think many will be pleasantly surprised by the performance mods that will become available.

For the M5 they have already made 50rwhp more horses out of an ECU tune along with headers and cams and exhaust. I am talking BHP not RWHP. to get 500 rwhp would be about 550-575bhp which would be crazy!

About the ECU, we dont know all the details about the new system but I wouldnt believe it would be too far off from the M5 & M6 software. alot of what we are saying is pure speculation and theory. Only time will tell what will be possible. If we still disagree then to each his own

Fair enough.

Just one more thing though: if we don't see 500hp M3s within 6 months of release then I guess we can agree it wasn't "easy" after all, no? Or heck lets be generous. We'll give it 9 months for the 500hp naturally aspirated m3s to start popping up. Sound good?

Cheers

Are you sure that 10-15 of those ponys did not come from removal of the charcoal filter? I'd bet they did. I'd love to see some dynos or references to this as well. ECU on the M5 vs.M3: Yes I think they will be really close. Last but not least I got money on mkoesel's side!

Guys, if you want to look at the aftermarket upgrades for the new M3, look no further than the M5 and M6. The V8 in the M3 is supposed to be based off of the M V10 (but it looks like it might be tuned even more aggressively). I don't know much about tuned M5s and M6s but I haven't seen one hit the 1/4 mile under 12 seconds yet or go over 575hp.

Sorry, I was talking about staying n/a. No turbos, no superchargers, no N20. I should have elaborated.

Even if they do the gains will be really modest 10-20 hp absolutely max is my guess. We'll get that by simply removing the charcoal filter like on the M5...
??

Perhaps you should read what Shiv actually does. It's not all about psi, matter of fact he stated that boost did very little in his tune.

There is no way that just by making the tune a bit more aggressive, feeding more fuel, or advancing time, etc that this car will be increased by no than 20hp. Probably around 12hp increase is realistic.

I have also read about a moderate increase of hp with the removal of the charcol filter in the M5/M6.

Some have did it for their 3 series and said it improved performance, id like to see some solid proof that HP was gained before i tamper with it.

www.m5board.com. Lots of discussion and even dyno results over there. This issue has been discussed significantly and all now are in agreement. The only issue is if the M3 will have the filter. I'm 90% sure it will have it as it is an emmissions component. We'll all be at 425-430 hp or so with 30 minutes of easy work!
