I have been looking at countless rims in my search for the ones for me and yesterday at work a fellow co worker was trying to tell me that a vehicle that has rims with lips or a deep dish will have a performance disadvantage over a vehicle with flush rims because of wind drag.
Any truth, or someone who doesn't know what he is talking about?

Wind drag? Hmm...I think you would need to test the car in a wind tunnel to answer that beyond a reasonable doubt...

I doubt it would make a difference. A flush wheel still has holes in it, that would create drag. You would need a completely sealed tight wheel in order for it to not do this, and then you would start melting things!

Lip vs. No Lip really has no effect on performance. What your Co-Worker is probably referring to is that most aftermarket wheels with lips are larger and heavier. This will have a detrimental effect on handling and acceleration which is why most go with Forged 3-Piece or Monoblock 1-Piece Forged Wheels which are no heavier than a factory wheel but allow you to go larger and wider.

Actually, I think he literally meant the wind drag created by the exposed wheel lip.

The recessed centers on deep dish wheels create an actual cavity that his co-worker seems to think will create a higher drag coefficient on the car at speed. (at least that's what it sounds like from the OP's description)

I don't think he was talking about wheel weight at all...

There will always be a drag of sorts no matter what unless you want to run Brawn's wheel covers

However, it will not be enough to where we'll noticed it.
