Front windshield needs replacing
I just noticed that my windshield is cracked and it has a crack almost all the way to the middle of the windhield. I was quoted 400 bucks plus tax to replace any other places I should look into any difference between oem and aftermarket
Thanx for the help |

Call your insurance company. In many states this is a no deductible repair.

Not if its cracked or so i have heard. They will fix chips but repairs do require a deductible claim.

400 isn't bad at all. OEM all the way. I had mine replaced by ... somebody, I don't remember, some random window replacement shop, on my old Z4M. The contact patch they used to attach the mirror/rain sensor module was white instead of black like the original. Looked like shit from the front of the car. (Car was Interlagos Blue). I told them I wanted it black but they wouldn't do it. I was trading it in shortly anyway so I let it go.

There is aftermarket from Pilkington (who makes the OEM glass) and St. Gobain-Sekurit (OEM for Audi and others).

Now...it's on the passenger side, and not much visible to me; but if the same crack had been on the driver's side, this would have been a replacement cost on my part of the deductible. It is repaired, and there is still a blemish, but not a big big deal where it is. - V .

how's PPG glass quality these days? As of about 5 to 6 years ago, it was still the strongest and highest quality glass one could find. But I wouldn't be surprised if all that changed in the past few years, with so much manufacturing going overseas...
If anyone can confirm that PPG is still high quality, then I would go PPG all the way. |

I generally agree with the OEM sentiment but in this case I wish there was a better aftermarket alternative.

It's still decent glass, though when I recently had my windshield replaced the installer said the overall quality of windshields is sliding downhill regardless of who makes it.

Technically they are not OEM. The Pilkington glass doesn't have a BMW emblem and is made in a different factory, and it has a tint strip (the final years of the E90/E92 didn't have it at all). Quality is still excellent, but it is definitely not an OEM windshield. I have no optical distortions in my "aftermarket" Pilkington that was just installed, FWIW.

The rain sensor does add a bit of cost since it's typically replaced with the windshield and there is a bit of extra labor + parts for that.

Look to make sure it isn't wavy before they put it in. Other than that, it doesn't matter IMO.

PPG was my windshield of choice for the past 25 years. My wife's Honda Odyssey just had its windshield replaced yesterday with the PGW windshield. For those that do not know PPG sold its glass business to PGW a few years ago. I also heard that the windshields are no longer being made in the US and are now being manufactured in China.
It was dark when my wife got home from work so I could not examine the windshield good but from what I can tell it looks to be good quality and the wife is happy. Quote:
