Bottoming out in the snow - how much does it take?

Just received a nice 15-20cm dump in the Vancouver area over night. No problems with traction with my Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds, but I'm always worried about bottoming out (or the getting so-called "turtled up") on the undercarriage.

Has anyone experienced this, and do you know exactly how deep the snow has to be for this to occur? Obviously suspension height plays a role, but I assume most of us Canadian M3 drives are on OEM springs for the winter time.

I think anything over 20cm I'd be in trouble, but I prefer not to find out using trial and error.

i'd say basically, if the amount of snow between the top and any hard surface underneath (pavement or packed snow) is significantly higher than your M3's clearance, you're screwed if you have to stop...
if you're rolling and go through a spot of deeper snow, don't stop and move through quick...
i'd say 20cm you're hooped !! let some other drivers pack it down for you and drive the MDX in the meantime !

Agree there M3dreamer... I just don't want to crawl underneath and measure my clearance to the undercarriage! I was hoping for someone else to tell me...

So competition package is 10cm?
I guess I had better be careful if Ottawa ever returns to winters of yore.

Beached my A4 a few times in the past 7 years, but we haven't had snow like that for a couple of winters now.

Hard to believe it's only 11 cm for non-ZCP. Perhaps that's the clearance to the front lip, but perhaps not the belly of the undercarriage?

10cm sure doesn't sound like much for Ottawa! Be careful!
