Sounds good to me! I'll do my best to work it out.

I just realized that most of the solutions I found for ducting utilize the ability to attach a reducer to the Airbox. The only problem with your Airbox is that you don't have the typical way of screwing the OEM Flap or reducer. After attaching the reducer, you can then route some big ducting from your front bumper into the Airbox.

Barry, are you going to corner weight it with yourself in the driver's seat? What's the scoop at VIR on November 14th? I might come down.

Yep that's the biggest single issue...

Yes the car will be cornerbalanced based on my body weight in the driver seat. I've got to see if I can make the 14th given my work schedule. Most likely I'll be able to make it.

Thanks!

Can't wait to see some on-track videos, Barry. Good luck with the build!

OMFG! That airbox is soooooo wrong. Next time you spend a couple grand on carbon fiber, make sure the fabricator knows something about intake systems. There is a formula for calculating the airbox volume and intake diameter/length to maximize horsepower. Your fabricator appears to be unaware of those formulas.

Sorry for being a jerk, but that airbox just screamed out to me.

First time on track!

Had a good time on Sunday taking the car out for it's first time on track. Still sorting out setup and a few other issues but the potential is there. Love the way it turns in and it really feels pretty good overall. I was having some mild oversteer issues in medium speed turns (1 and 4 at VIR). So looking at making some changes. Few pics and vid (sound is terrible so you may as well mute) below. Lap time is not that great as I was being conservative

I am just going to go ahead and disagree with you on that one. I am pretty sure the guys who built the car in that picture have an idea of what they are doing, considering the are previous Grand Am GS champs in an E92 and have been racing and developing the E46 chasis and motor since it was introduced.

Congrats Barry! Car looks great, but it's got to be a huge relief to be able to really test it out.

I agree with SM#80. In addition, that is a near 100% replica of the BMW CSL Airbox. Really the only main difference is the decal and the ducting. So if you think that BMW Motorsport made a poor decision, I may have to disagree with you.

If you look at the Z4 GTR that has the P54B32, you'll see that it has the CSL Airbox and very similar ducting to the one that Fall Line built.

Car looks great. Thanks for posting the build up, it was a great read! I've wanted to pick up another s2k and make it a dedicated track car. Maybe after I get married next year I can finally do it....

Looks great... wish I was right there with you, but my M3 was getting repaired from an accident with a deer

Would loved to have seen/heard it in person. Any videos from VIR?

Hi folks. I'm back from being banned for making obnoxious comments about other members' cars/intelligence/sexual proclivities. I'm hoping to limit my drunk posting and prevent my annual ban in the future.

To clarify my previous comments on airbox design please read up on Helmholtz resonators and then find information on snorkel length/width. The object is to take advantage of momentum of the air entering the airbox to help pull in more air. There are optimum velocities to obtain in the snorkel to maximize average pressure inside the airbox. Unless the airbox in the picture I commented on has an internal tube much smaller than the outside diameter shown, that airbox has left horsepower on the table.

No winning team gets everything right. They just get less things wrong than their competition.

No offense intended here either, but assuming you can eyeball that kind of thing from a photo on the internet is pretty damn presumptuous. And if you CAN do that accurately, I suggest starting up your own fluid dynamics consulting firm because you could operate with a lot less overhead than everyone else

Not too shabby for a first time out even if you were taking it easy Barry

I actually understand fluid dynamics evaluations well and am regarded highly by people who do CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) for a living. That airbox is wrong; and I've shown folks how to look to understand what is necessary to do it right.
