Interesting stuff about M-DCT from the manual

Here are some info in the manual I found interesting about M-DCT:

System Limitations
-- The M-DCT is equipped with an overheating protection system that protects the clutch against extreme loads. The indicator lamp lights up yellow when the transmission becomes too warm. Avoid high engine loads and driving off frequently. When the transmission is overheated, the indicator lamp lights up red and the fuel supply to the engine is cut off. You cannot continue driving until the transmission has cooled down. Avoid driving off frequently with high acceleration and do not hold the vehicle on inclines by pressing lightly on the accelerator while letting the clutch slip, as this may cause the transmission to overheat. In traffic congestion or at very low speeds, use the Low Speed Assistant.

Low Speed Assistant:
-- You can also use the Low Speed Assistant when rocking the vehicle out of deep snow. To do so, shift between reverse gear and the forward position without pressing the brake.

N Neutral:
-- when downshifting on a slippery road, the M-DCT automatically disengages and engages the clutch, i.e. it is not necessary to manually engage the neutral position.

Unlocking the transmission lock manually:
-- If a power failure occurs (dead battery, etc), the transmission lock must be released manually, otherwise the rear wheels are blocked and the vehicle cannot be towed. Release the transmission lock manually for towing only and forcefully apply the parking brake to prevent rolling. The transmission lock is under the shifter boot on the left side.

S6 is only available if you turn off DSC. If you are in S6 and turn DSC on, it automatically puts you in S5.

That would be just great while attacking a turn, and the engine cuts off

thanks for posting...the unlocking of the transmission is great, your car doesn't have to be dragged onto a flatbed or "rocked" off to get it down...this would have save a lot of M5's from torture when the had the vanos line failures...I wonder how soon dealers will have demo...

well first it goes to yellow when it gets warm, so its warning you to relax a bit and not push the car harder so it avoids turning RED and then cuts off, so you shouldn't be attacking a turn if the indicator has turned yellow...don't want to risk it cutting off at the wrong moment...great safety feature so more harm isn't done

According to the earlier press release this thing is designed for serious track use. It has a 9 qt dry sump capacity, yes 9 quarts. The transmission is air cooled as well the engine and tranny cooling are interconnected. The warning lights to me just seem like a really nice, ultra conservative addition to the system. I would not wait around for the first reports of the cooling warning lights.

Now I'm wondering how it will stand up to track days. I wish that some mags would have already tested it under some heavy duty abuse.

with the Bugatti and Nissan GTR this is the only tranny so likely it's well tested by now but for sure there will be some with problems (just like any system even a MT can have a problem) doesn't mean it's going to be a problem for most.

I am very skeptical both by nature and especially of marketing folks. I should know, I do quite a bit of marketing myself . Anyway, when BMW talks specifically about the ability of their new M-DCT to take track level abuse I believe it. However, it is true that only time will tell.

It's an automated manual.

I plan on tracking my car, and I'll be quite dissapointed if there are overheating problems. However, from Senior B's post it sounds like it's excessive clutch slipping that causes overheating, which won't be a problem on the track.

Under the shifter boot on the drivers side is the lock. When locked it is in a horizontal position. You take the screwdriver from the tool box, insert it in the end of the lock and pull it up to a vertical position to unlock it.

THanks ... do you have a part # for that manual. See if I can get a PDF version from BMW NA.

Yup, my guess is that only repeatedly using LC would cause the sort of overheating that they refer to, not driving hard on a track!

Thanks for the info SMS!

Yup. Basically a manual with no clutch (the computer works the clutch). I'm going to have to get used to that though. Coming from an AT, it's going to be strange to have to hold the brake on an incline I imagine.

I know I keep referring to DSG on a lot of occasions but in this case it is relevant. VW ran two DSG Golfs at the Nurburgring 24hrs and I believe the gearboxes worked perfectly. If VW's DSG can do it then I have every faith that BMW can do the same with a more up to date design.

Remember, unlike a manual in which you can quite easily make a bad shift or miss a gear, the DCT will never miss a beat which means you will never accidentally choose the wrong gear and over rev it (possibly blowing the engine in the process) or abuse the gears and clutch. No, for serious trackwork the DCT will be the better choice for amateurs and semi-pros alike.

It's just us die-hard manual shifters which will wish to get more enjoyment out of doing things ourselves.

you should use the brakes with an Auto tranny on a hill too.
