I'll tell you a few of my tricks. First off; I started training not underwater but while laying down and simply holding my breath with absolute minimal movement. Minimal movement uses the absolute least energy; just concentrate; close your eyes and be absolutely still. You will see it's a lot easier than most think; once again; the key is to be absolutely motionless. Use a stopwatch to time yourself.

After that and after you get real good above water without almost passing out or completely running out of breath you can try under water; the key here is to be as high in the water as possible or as close to the surface as possible because there is much less pressure higher up.

Most people have a tough time at 45 seconds.
2 minutes is excruciatingly tough for most and after a few minutes you generally pass out. Houdini was able to somehow do it for 5 minutes for those escape the chain tricks.

Warning / Note - Do not do this... it is very unsafe if something happens to you under water i.e. you pass out. I was able to do it after tons of practice and I always had someone watch me.
