More specific? There is a sales tax, an import tax, and registration taxes, but there isn't anything called an overall "car tax".

I assume you mean the tax on car sales...

Varies from state to state - then sometimes can vary within a single state.
http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/sales.html

For example, Michigan is 6%... end of story.
In Arizona, it's 5.6% for the state, but then Maricopa County (where Phoenix is) adds 0.7%, and individual cities add between 1.5-3% to that. So I paid 7.8% total.

Depends what state you purchase in. Taxes are different in each, ranging at a high of 11-12%, and a low of nothing. In the state I live in, Oregon, if the car costs $41,999, you pay $41,999.00 to take it home. If you buy in our neighboring state, Washington, you'd pay $45,694.91 at 8.8%.

Plus the price shown on BMW's site is MSRP. Most buyers in the US don't pay MSRP on vehicles unless it's in high-demand, or an exotic car. The other number to be aware of is invoice price. Depending on the dealership and your negotiating skills, you usually pay somewhere between invoice and MSRP.

Delaware (which is a state) does not charge sales tax for any purchases, including cars.

Why would you buy a car here in the states then ship it to France? Wouldn't the shipping and import taxes & fees eliminate any discount you would get if you bought a car in the U.S.?
