Hi guys...I'm new in the bimmer world...I got a 11' Alpine White M3 with the competition package...and I wanted to go 20's...I wanted to know if you guys could explain better what are the advantages or differences between the HRE P40s and the Avant Garde M310. I read on other threads the difference between the forged and the low pressure cast on the wheels, but I'm new at this so have some patience with me please. The price is a big difference so I wanted to know if you guys could help me realize if it's worth paying that much money on the hre's, I don't drive crazy fast neither do I burn my tires and stuff....

HRE p40's (which you contacted me with) are some of the best rims I have ever owned. HRE is a very hi end brand and their quality of product def backs it up. I was very impressed with their facility and their product.

HRE is the Sexy, highly educated European woman, most likely from Sweden, perfect in every way, but very high maintenance and expensive. (great quality)

Avant and other reps are like your average American girl, pretty, not too expensive, but rarely are they perfect and/or highly educated (not so great quality)

HRE uses the highest quality material for our wheel production, from forgings to assembly bolts to the packaging used for shipping. This goes alongside the craftsmanship of the employees that manufacture our wheels in-house here in San Diego.

Our raw forgings, which are a proprietary design, are supplied to us by the premier forging company in the United States, Aluminum Precision Products. They are located in Southern California. This company is an OEM forging supplier for the wheels on the Koeniggsegg Agera, Pagani Huarya, Ferrari 458 Italia, Audi R8, and others, not to mention their primary customer, Boeing. We understand the importance of quality forgings and we don’t skimp here.

Currently all of our raw materials are made in the US with the exception of our titanium assembly bolts, which are made in Germany by the same supplier of titanium hardware for the Airbus A380 and Boeing aircraft. We actually don’t care which country we buy our raw materials from as long as the quality is top-notch.

There are some very fine Japanese, German, and Italian wheel companies that make high quality products and we know them well and have respect for each other. What we share in common is the commitment to proper engineering and manufacturing quality. There should be a clear distinction between unsophisticated style-only designs common in the U.S. market and designs driven by an understanding of the engineering fundamentals that are essential to proper wheel design. You may have the best material at your disposal, but it does not guarantee the best finished product without the proper engineering and attention to detail.

Feel free to come down and visit our operation. We have an open door policy. Stop by anytime. In fact we just hosted the local Porsche Club of America and BMW Club of America for a factory Open House about 1 month ago. It was great and we gave them all a private tour. It is a very informative and easy way to learn about HRE and wheels.

The P40 features a very highly engineered design. That is why the P40 style has been copied many times over. But if you put the wheels next to each other, you will notice that the replica/copy are not really the same. The ways that our engineers are able to reduce the weight of the P40/P40S and still retain high strength is an artform, this can not be easily duplicated by the cast replicas. You might notice how thick the replica spokes look in comparison to the real P40.

The wheels and tires are one of the most important parts on your car. They are what hold your vehicle to the road, it is not something you should take lightly. Many of our customers have high powered vehicles, and they do not want to risk running on wheels that they have to be worried about. This includes many different Motorsport race team. I would check to see if the wheels you are considering are load rated to TUV standards and have any track history in Motorsports.

We did indeed experience a failure in ALMS this season but that’s why we’re racing. We won the championship with Fall-Line BMW M3 the season before but if all we did was win, it wouldn’t challenge us. We will continue racing and we will expect to have ups and downs. It’s the challenge that will make us better. By the way, the wheel that failed would have easily passed a TUV or any other series of tests for road cars. We know this because we design wheels that pass TUV all the time and HRE is one of the few if not the only U.S. aftermarket wheel company that has TUV certification of our factory. Others claim it. We have the certification to show it. If you’re worried about your aftermarket wheels being strong enough, you should be… just not with HRE.

To add to what Lon has said: If you buy a wheel that is certified to meet the TUE or the JWL/VIA standards, you know you are getting a wheel that was designed and engineered for the purpose. With wheels that don't meet either standard, you don't know what you are getting, which is fine if all you plan to do is slowly cruise the local high school or park somewhere and hang out with your friends. If you plan to carry your family and friends and use the car as it was designed, you are much better off to stick with the BMW OEM wheels or buy aftermarket wheels that are certified to meet the JWL/VIA or TUV standards.
