damn man thats rough, really sorry to see OP... and I can't imagine how that is for you to watch. My car is temporarily parked on the street, and this made me feel that much more uncomfortable.

Hope everything works out for you, and best of luck with the C63.

They can't get what's coming to them-that would be the remainder of their lives in excruciating misery.

Sorry that your life had to intersect with these pieces of crap.

Sorry to read about your loss, hope your insurance will cover

I think instead of all this alarm crap the car manufacturers should build a system into the car that locks all the doors, alerts the Police automatically where the car is via GPS and thus catch the thief ... The owner would automatically deactivate this action since he/she would have the key.

It may reduce this sort of crime ... Vandalism.

I feel a bit out of the loop here, but what security flaw in the OBD port????????????? Is this like a known problem with the M3 or something? I'm beginning to feel nervous about parking my car on the street at work!

It's a security hole with any modern BMW. You can use the OBD port to pair a spare key to the car. There are devices that can do this which thieves buy for less than $1000 in China, see here.

The cars are broken into physically, the device is plugged in and a spare key is activated. With that, the car can be started. Afterwards, the (broken) key cylinders are replaced with the ones fitting the new keys.

Isn't the alarm supposed to go off and disable the engine when the car is broken into?

Sure, but that is a problem in itself, because there is a dead spot around the A-pillar area behind the steering wheel. The OBD port is located just in that area, so that you can break the front part of the driver window and reach the OBD port undetected by the alarm.

That means, with alarm equipped, the broken window has to be replaced, too. Sometimes, the thieves break the window, code a new key, remove the airbag to fake a part theft and return to take the car only after the owner has repaired the window, see here.

Looks like a repo with that service van driving by just a few moments beforehand. Why didn't they just start the car up and drive it off?

I bet they're the same guys who sell and install aftermarket alarms. From the UK as well
look at 2''15

Same thing, who do you think write computer viruses ? The guys who know enough about computer security to sell security software. One day they cross the fire to the other side.

OP, I can't tell clearly from the video; did they break your driver's side window to access the car? It seems that they just picked the lock and opened the door with such ease and without setting off the alarm.

+ 1

OP, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss

Will insurance cover the whole damage??

Also, are all Euro Spec M3's affected by this glitch or does it include US Spec M3's as well.

Someone mentioned about RHD models being affected more then LHD models?

Can someone clarify this and what can be done to prevent something similar happening in the future?
