Intakes for better sound?

After seeing Fog's insanely beautiful CF intake and the talk of better sound in the cabin, I was wondering if folks could weigh in on a more economical way to get a better cabin sound with an intake.

I don't see a lot of intake threads on this forum. Are people not doing intakes? Or if so, what is popular?

thanks!

I run the full AFE stage 2 that replaces the stock intake box. Really a much deeper sound. Really sounds incredible under throttle.

I simply have a drop-in filter from BCM......and that simply does the trick! However, I do think about picking up the Dinan CF intake from time to time however, I wonder if there's truly any benefit over a simple drop-in filter for the factory air box is very well made.

Well I have had both drop in filters and a full intake replacement and the sound is much much different running the full replacement. Also that other thread with the technocracy junk..... I can't see how the plenum cover would add any noise at all as it's just a cover for aesthetic purposes only.

The plenum is a part of the intake system. It's not just an esthetic cover. On the e46 replacing it with a CF unit changes the sound. I haven't seen one for the e9x though.

I have just a BCM filter too and both passengers and myself can hear the intake clearly even with my Eisenmann Race

Yeah, basically, I'm looking for anything that will improve the sound in the cabin. I know that is subjective, but looking for other's experience with it. Personally, I love the stock sound and I've driven a stock M with MPE on there.. I absolutely love the sound of the MPE... it's next on my list.

Way back in the day, when I was a Mustang Cobra guy, I would drop in a K&N and notice a bit more intake sound and throttle response. Wondering if the same is true for Ms and if I should go drop in or more.

Thanks for the responses so far!

The Dinan or Macht Schnell elbows with filters will help improve sound fairly dramatically (I've had both). Think Dinan also now sells just the intake elbow without the filter, so you can keep the stock filter or bolt on the AA filter as keeps the stock charge pipe whereas the more expensive Dinan intake includes elbow, charge pipe and filter (K&N).

Also, for a cheap way to potentially increase engine/cockpit noise, maybe try these out:

I was thinking of getting the BMS filters and seeing if the Technocraft CF cowl covers would fit properly so that adds more sound. Otherwise, can install the BMS filters and get rid of the cowl and see if sound is improved. Would be much cheaper way than getting a CF covered plenum (thx for the compliments btw ).

My Dinan CF Intake makes nice sounds.

The OEM box is already so well engineered, there's hardly reason to spend money on something else.

Because the power yeilds are so minimal. People do drop ins for the most part.

On this car, intake mods are more cosmetic than performance. You can't really improve significantly on what the car came with from the factory

Agree, though I think the OP was seeking sound enhancement, which various intake components will definitely accomplish.

I have the AFE full replacement intake, it's inexpensive and works like a charm. If you get cowl filter deletes you will get better "cabin" noise.

With Dinan or MS, you don't soon forget about the intake noise after a few weeks of driving.

Only Full CF plenum will remind you of the 8 ITB singing at full song.

Goke Intake is ok but for few thousand euros, you are only getting the top half plenum in CF. The bottom half is OEM.

Interesting if you click those links it says the elbow only is cosmetic only and adds zero performance. Which then you click on the elbow and filter and realize the only thing that is adding power is the drop in filter as that's the only difference! Quite interesting they even recognize the 800 dollar part is cosmetic only and the 100 dollar filter adds the 5 hp

Inner charge pipe is also different with the intake kit vs elbow cosmetic piece (which uses the stock inner charge pipe). It comes down to whether you believe Dinan and their dyno testing or not. He explained in a video that the inner charge pipe change alone added 5+ bhp to the M5, which is interesting. At any rate, elbow completely worth it IMO for the sound alone (same with the MS piece,) which is why I suggested that if you want to save a couple hundred bucks, get the Dinan elbow piece (not the intake) and add the AA green filter with your stock charge pipe and get what you believe to be the same HP gain, but significant increase in intake sound, which is what this thread seems to be about.

Yup, exactly...you are being charged for the "core" part that Goke (or the 2-3 other guys that do it) uses which is like 700 EUR. Ideally would be nice to send in your own plenum and have them fuse it (it only takes 5 days), but no one I know offers this service. Also, don't know of anyone who has made a full CF intake for the S65 (incl trumpets)..only seen them for the S54.

Motorsport24 does at 4450 euros.

http://www.motorsport24.de/motorspor...ort::2054.html

I love intake sound but don't love them enough to part 4450 euros for it.

Had it been closer to 2000-2500 euros I can still consider.

There is no doubt this airbox will sound wicked at WOT.

Then of course there is this: http://www.motorsport24.de/motorspor...ace::1546.html

Quite a bit of ancillaries will have to be relocated to make this work.
