New transmission

I noticed a very faint rattle at idle and in neutral that went away with the clutch depressed. Told my service advisor that I thought the throwing bearing was going bad. The mechanic confirmed the noise and changed the bearing today and the noise didnt go away. So they ordered a new 6mt and it goes in tomorrow. I'm honestly very happy I get a new trans for free but has anybody else had this problem? My car only has 29000 miles and there are no drivability issues at all.

This sounds totally normal to me. The clutches just rattle in neutral.

I've had my car about five days and posted this same issue in my first post. Sounds a little like the flywheel chatter when you shut down an E46 with the clutch out, but fainter and constant. Push the pedal in and it seems to go away.

Seems like it could be normal but I was going to ask the SA as well.

Anyone else hear this?

IMO, this is normal. Mine does it and so have other performance cars that I have owned. Enjoy your new transmission!

I had the same sound in my E36 M3. I could also feel a faint vibration in neutral at about 1500 rpms. I took the car to two different dealers. I even left it at the second dealer because they had a German tech coming (I guess they "tour" dealerships for hard to solve cases) so he could look at it. They ripped apart everything and could find nothing wrong. They said it is a "normal operating condition"....I knew better....

I then was told of a local shop that was good. I took it in there and within literally 1 minute, he identified the problem as the flywheel. Apparently the E36 had a dual mass flywheel. When the "spring" (I dunno wtf it is) between the two pieces of metal wears out, it makes that sound, and can cause a vibration.

Needless to say, he swapped the flywheel out and no more noise.

I am not sure if the E90/2/3 M3 has a dual mass flywheel or not, but the noise you are describing, and when it happens, sounds identical. It's worth checking out I guess.

Does anybody know if the M has a dual mass flywheel?

Oh the tech gods are going to flame me on this.. but let me share my experience. I've been here before; its not an issue and more visible in 6MT cars because you control clutch engagement. It's the flywheel rattle ; you wont here it if the clutch is disengaged and you only hear it when the clutch is engaged and your are in neutral gear. Sounds annoying I know, but it only gets louder if you change it to LWFW or a lightened dual mass flywheel. Same PTA was in the 335i in 6MT cars; I am okay with this.

Like any other noises you hear in the M3; Cold Start Growl; Raspy Exhaust; Squealing brakes at low speed - just tell your peeps its the sound of performance and you paid for it.

throw out bearing sounds are similar but its a knocking (tack tack tack) and continues threw the rev range; this other sound u hear below 1500 or at idle 700rpm is flywheel rattle in the bell housing

Mine just went in for a transmission rattle today it is a loud noise in every gear at 2500-3000 rpm. Sounds like two pieces of metal vibrating rapidly and banging on eachother.

Spoke with my BMW tech today when I picked up my car. He says he has replaced a few 6mt transmissions for this same input shaft bearing problem. They had the trans in 3 hours it was a reman from Germany so obviously im not the first guy with this issue. I also asked him how many m3s where in town because I've only seen one and it's mine, he said about ten. So there is only about ten m3s in Reno and he has replaced a few transmissions. He told me not to worry the problem won't come back and I'm really not concerned at all. The car shifted amazing before and now it is even better evrything feels much tighter and not just the shifter. I had noticed what I thought was exhaust drone at certain speeds before and it is gone now.
