Castrol full synthetic. I forget the weight, but it wasnt something Advance Auto carried, so I went to the dealer and bought a quart there.

You should be okay in the meantime as long as you dont rack up a bunch of miles before topping off.

your car holds 9 quarts of oil and the gauge only shows the final quart. If you are a little low that means you are some where between a quart low.

regardless of what you have but especially the m3, you can add a quart of something similar as there are 9 friggin quarts. The slightly different weight will be neglible when mixed in. Autozone and stories carry a couple different 50 weight oils (only the top number matters at all especially for adding a quart) Sure its not ideal. If you can go to the dealer great. Carry a quart next time. But until then grab a 50 weight oil at the local auto store and you will be fine. Make sure its sythnetic obviously

The last time I got the warning I added castrol 5w-50. Just make sure you don't overfill it and get 10w-60 in as soon as you can.

Use Synthetic please, the closer the weight the better, you're adding less than a full bottle in a 9ish bottle engine...no biggie

Do not blend oils as they all have different additive packages, some of which can react together. Just go to the dealer and get the right stuff when possible or order it online. This is not an emergency.

He did not ask which oil to use but rather which to use or what to do when no dealer is available or the right type readily available.

I think this comes up a lot for people.

And the additive packages in 1/9th of the oil after dilution will have zero impact on anything. I would not add 2 litres plus of a different oil but a half litre or litre is nothing

Assuming this is for an M3 (despite the fact that your avatar indicates a 335is), read the M3 Supplement. Alternative oil weights are clearly listed: 10W-40, 5W-50, 10W-50, synthetic. Since it's summer I'd go with 10W-50 if possible. If this is for a 335is, the regular manual specifies approved weights: 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40, 5W-40.

And then yes consider keeping a bottle of the proper stuff in the car or at least at home. My dealer gives me a couple bottles when I run low between oil changes as part of Ultimate Service.

EDIT: Turns out the BMWUSA website has an even more detailed guide for this: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx
