Question for those who know more than I! Does how the USB drive is formatted matter? The on I'm using is currently formatted as FAT32. Should I reformat to NTFS or does that matter to what I am trying to do?

If there is nothing to loose on the flash drive, reformat it again as FAT32 and put the file back in the root. If you have another car handy try your flash drive there as well. That could tell you whether the issue is the car or flash drive itself. I have updated several cars with my flash drive and all loaded drama free. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I just got my 2012 convertible delivered to Portland after taking European delivery in May. It has been frustrating to be able to tweet but can't get text or email. Something more to look forward to with iOS6.

Similar Problem As KSCarrol

I'm having the exact same issue as kscarrol. I have a US spec 328i 2011 (built in sep 2010). I have the software update option on my iDrive and I've gone to the BMW/update site, put in my VIN and was instructed to download the latest update (UPD01004.bin). Put on a recently formatted FAT 32 4gig flashdrive into the center console and it tells me the software is incompatible. Is it possible that I need to install the previous updates before the latest? The software on my idrive right now is:
MX - 002.005.022
TX - 002.005.022

Well, you're getting farther than I.

iPhone 4s with iOS 6. iDrive from January 2012, with BMW software version: MX-3.5.4 and TX-3.5.

The only thing that seems to be different with the new iOS 6, I think, is this "Office" in Bluetooth functions available in vehicle. (see attachment).

In looking at the OP's first pictures, I see that he has "Current Office" but I'm only seeing the other two selection options.

I'm really interested in how to get the SMS to show up in iDrive. Did you configure something on the iPhone side?

Make sure you have notifications for email and SMS to show up in the lock screen.

It has been broadly reported from several sources and platforms that only SMS messages are currently working in the GM of iO6 via Bluetooth MAP. Unfortunately, Email hasn't worked since Beta 3. Hopefully there will be an update from Apple or a BT update from BMW that restores/corrects the functionality.

In the meantime...hurry up and wait

Can someone remind me, what is the type/name of protocol that Apple added in iOS 6 that allows for messaging to show up in the iDrive?

Message Access Profile (MAP)

Message Access Profile (MAP)[4] specification allows exchange of messages between devices. Mostly used for automotive handsfree use. The MAP profile can also be used for other uses that require the exchange of messages between two devices. The automotive Hands-Free use case is where an on-board terminal device (typically an electronic device as a Car-Kit installed in the car) can talk via messaging capability to another communication device (typically a mobile phone). For example, Bluetooth MAP is used by HP Send and receive text (SMS) messages from a Palm/HP smartphone to an HP TouchPad tablet [5]. Bluetooth MAP is used by Ford in select SYNC Generation 1-equipped 2011 and 2012 vehicles [6] and also by BMW with many of their iDrive systems. The Lexus LX and GS 2013 models both also support MAP as does the Honda CRV 2012, Acura 2013 and ILX 2013. Apple introduces Bluetooth MAP in iOS6 for the iPhone and iPad.

Alright, I found another source of good, credible information that I just tested. I have all of the options now, appearing, but in my tests, I am not receiving the messages...but pretty close. There's a couple of pre-requisites to make it work...foremost is that your iPhone screen must be LOCKED. This makes sense, actually...they don't want a person fiddling with the iPhone, so these features work when you've locked it.

Here's the URL to the source... again, I'm ALMOST there. Everything seems to be set-up correctly, I get the same menu features (like filters), but the incoming messages do not seem to get into the car's system.

How can you be "pretty close", but still not receiving messages? It's an all or nothing thing as I see it.

Hi.

According to several sources, there is a bug where the e-mails do not work properly, but the text messaging does. And since I do not know how to send a time-delayed text message to myself, I'll have to wait another twenty minutes to experiment when a friend arrives.

"Pretty close" meaning the configuration seems to be good, but I can't fully test it.

Updated: Yes, it does work (text messaging.) The instructions quoted from above are good. Except I don't think the set-it-to-auto-lock-one-minute is necessary. It received a text message about ten seconds after I pressed the top lock-button. There is no incoming chime/sound on either the iPhone nor the car's system, just the little envelope icon on the iDrive display. The voice-reading of the text message is decent, if not more than a little Cylon-like. For long drives, this will be handy because one can decide whether a text message is meaningful enough to pull over and respond, or just keep driving to the next logical stopping point.

Having the phone locked or not has no bearing on if the message is pushed to idrive.

A quick test is to just send a message to your phone. For At&t customers, dial *639# to check upgrade eligibility. AT&T will send you a SMS within about 10 seconds.

Thanks, the instructions you posted worked for me.

The "no incoming chime/sound on either the iPhone nor the car's system" has bugged me. I am hopping someone fixes this.

Thanks Again
