I liked this review as much as any I have read thus far. Nice writting, good facts ans great pics. A couple points I took away:

This test car lacked adjustable side bolsters but the non-active side bolsters ARE in fact optional. That sounded a bit unclear from the article
EDC heartily recommended (not a suprise)
"this M3 rivals the 911 at times for a total drive experience" - when will this car get any respect from the hardcore P-fans??
Brakes faded at the Ascari track (aftermarket BBK may be the only needed mod)
$59,000 est. US base price (I think all these mags speculate as much as we do rather than having any real inside line, although they did talk to and get quotes from Drager about M-DCT)

This intial impression, in its content and presentation, made me want to walk over the dealer, which is pretty close, and put down my deposit...

AGREED! I'd have to say it left me with no doubt that my deposit was a wise decision (at least until I get to see and test drive one)... That sound from the V8 is worth it alone.

Another interesting tidbit that people have been questioning about direct injection.

Cars almost always look better from above. I have an office building that looks down on a major street and it's amazing how much better cars look from above and at an angle- you can really see how wide and aggressive
they are. One of the first undisguised pics of the 04' 5 series when it came out was taken from above being loaded onto a truck and it looked HOT!

Then of course I saw the pics from street level and noticed how Bangle screwed it up. Oh well.......

Saw that - sounds like an excuse to me. Audi DGI in the RS4 works fine at 8250 rpm in a very similar application. How many years ago was that motor designed? No excuses. BMW caught snoozing on this IMO. One of my pet peeves about the new engine.

Let me say it another time:
BMW's new HPI is a totally new technology. They just managed to feature it in their latest inline6 engines (and it still makes some problems). NOT even the 335i does have the second generation DI. (I must confess I told you otherwise some months ago, but now realized that's wrong). So what Draeger said seems true, the compatibility between HPI and the higher revvs of above 8000rpm needs additional time for development. What BMW could have done is to feature the same technology that Audi uses, but they didn't do that. HPI in an M engine isn't possible yet. BTW I've seen an M5 test car in Munich some weeks ago which had additional intakes in the front apron. Maybe it was a HPI test car.

Thought about that as well. However, I posted a thread some time back about how the direct injection in the RS4 motor was causing the engine to eat through it's oil by seeping past the piston rings. It's definately a problem and while the RS4 engine does feature DI/HPI it is not a refined process. Perhaps BMW met with the same limitations. Would tie into with what Drager said.

As I said, the RS4 engine does not feature HPI!

Isn't HPI just BMW's name for DI?

RS4 engine does feature DI.

You are technically correct that the RS4 doesn't have HPI as that is BMW's implementation. But that was never being stated.
