OP. Which form of whiskey did you mean when you posted? Kind of a broad question considering there are Scotch, Irish, Canadian, Rye, Bourbon and Sour Mash. All of which have very different flavors.

Single malt Scotch is more about the 'mood, atmosphere, experience, etc' then the 'taste.' I have found Laphroaig taste completely different from one occasion to the next. Sometimes the smokiness comes through and other times it is down right medicinal.

Yep, that seems to be a feature of SMs. Blendeds shoot for consistency and SMs just shoot for something that is close to their previous batches.

Even from the same bottle I find the 'mood' sets the tone for the taste.

I like my drinks cold. I have not tried it neat or with warm water although I may have to now for comparison.

Don't over do it with the water. You seriously only need about two drops and then just let it sit for a few minutes to breathe

If you don't like peaty, stay away from scotch from the Islay and Island regions.

I generally agree with this. Macallan 18 year is probably the best value for money in their lineup. Macallan 25 year is too expensive for all but the biggest occasions, 21 year really isn't that different from 18 year, and everything below Macallan 18 year isn't smooth enough.

Yea I don't mind it in like say Johnnie Walker Green doses but way to strong in Islay...

I forgot a REAL good SM - 14yo Oban - it runs about 60-65$ and it is just flawless.

I also got a bottle of ardbeg and it reminds me of creosote - almost road tar smell.

My favorites:

Irish - Jameson 18 Year is awesome stuff. The 12 year is a good "daily" drinker. If you have $150 burning a hole in your pocket, try a bottle of Middleton Very Rare.

Single Malt Scotch - Lagavulin. It is very smokey, so not for some. MaCallan is good stuff, too.

Scotch Blend - any of the JW's, but I prefer Black and up, on the rocks. On a hot day, it is tough to beat a little smooth J&B on the rocks. Cheap and satisfying!

Bourbon - Woodford Reserve is good. It's been a long time, but I remember really enjoying it.

My intent was to get everyone's best recommendations, regardless of the type of whiskey. I'm obviously a newb considering I only drink JD and haven't really tried anything else, haha. I just picked up some JW Gold at bevmo, next on this list is Macallan...I'm building up my liquor cabinet one bottle at a time.

Nothing wrong with JD, it's a good "every day" type of drink (not that I'm drinking whisky every day...), good with 7up for when I need a change from Jameson.

But yea, Scotch is awesome, it's the only whisky I can drink straight or on rocks w/ no mixers. Always good to have some nice bottles for when you really need to relax

I've been getting Dalwhinnie from Trader Joe's and that stuff is pretty good for $30. My bro in law and I prefer McCalan 18, but when neither of us have it, 12 or 15 is fine. He prefers a single ice cube, I'm mostly neat.

I finally picked up a few bottles of Macallan 15yr Fine Oak and was not impressed.

It's good, but certainly no better than the 12yr (which costs ~1/2 as much) and definitely not as good as other options at the same price point. Someone once recommended the Macallan 12yr Sherry Oak over the 15yr Fine Oak and I'm tempted to agree (even without trying that specific 12yr).

Bowmore is also a good choice and a little cheaper than Macallan. The 12yr is a good inexpensive choice as long as you enjoy how smokey it is.

Having a glass of Ardbeg 10 now, love it, it's fantastic, a few drops of spring water and the flavors comes out very nicely.

If you don't like peaty whiskeys, stay away from Islay malts. You'll get that medicinal phenol scent on the nose in addition to 10 other things but it sounds like you're looking for a blended scotch and not a single malt.

Johnnie Blue is great, but for $200, I'd rather buy Johnnie Gold or 10 other whiskies.

Nothing wrong with Gentleman's Jack, it's not that bad actually.

Macallan 18 is sublime, as is Macallan 12, Laphroaig also make some amazing single malts.

Just bought a bottle of The Yamazaki 18 year old. Fantastic stuff. Tastes like a Speyside scotch, and is every bit as good just about any scotch I've had. It's about $85-100 a bottle, but worth it IMO, especially considering the Macallan has gone down hill a bit over the past few years (at least IMO). This stuff has a similar taste to the Macallan I remember as being so great, but at a fraction of the price.
